The Maa Biraja Temple placed in Jajpur roughly near north Bhubaneswar, Odisha is included in the 18 main shaktipeethas. Maa Durga is admired as Girija-Biraja & Bhagwaan Shiva as Jagannath. Mother Sati’s abdomen fell here.
Maa Biraja Devi is worshiped here blossoming as the universal trimurti as Trishakti Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. The Maa Biraja Temple includes a wide area and has diverse shrines to Bhagwaan Shiva as well as other goddesses. the Skanda Purana states the purificatory cleansing strength of this divine shrine.
Legend and History
Biraja temple: the existing temple was built during the thirteen century, but the temple was ruined during the afghan conquest in the year 1568 AD. later in the ist half of the 19th century a zamindar of jajpur, Sudarshan Mahapatra rebuilt and restored the temple which we see now.
The idol is Dwibhujamurthy, holding Trishul in one palm and Mahishasura’s tail in a different hand. Maa Biraja devi also known as Girija devi, Viraja devi and Biraja devi. Here Maa Biraja devi worshiped as Trishakti Mahakali, Mahalakshmi, and Mahasaraswati. Devotees wish to offer their hair to the almighty goddess. This area is also popular for Shraddha
