About Arun Aditya Temple

Arun Aditya Temple is the very less known temple of Varanasi, dedicated to Lord Surya “Sun”. This temple is situated in Trilochan Mahadev Mandir.  It is one of the 12 Adityas.

Legend

Arun Aditya temple has a short story behind it. Once sage Agastya asked Karthikeya about the vintage and the story behind her slavery out of curiosity which made lord Skanda [Karthikeya] tell about the story behind Vinita’s slavery even after being a devotional woman.

Lord, Karthikeya told that Sage Kashyap had many wives and two of them were kadru and vinata. Kadru gave birth to hundred snakes whereas Vinata gave birth to three children, Owl, Garuda, and Arun.

Initially, when vinata’s first son was born who was an Owl, he became the King of all the birds, but later due to his inability, the birds started to pass over him. Therefore, to this day the birds do not have a king of their own.
While Owl was Vinata’s first offspring, the other two were still in the egg. Vinata wanted her remaining two eggs to hatch as soon as possible. as she could not keep up the disregard faced by his first son. So, she became impulsive about her other two eggs which did not hatch yet so, she decided to break open one of the eggs prematurely. she wanted to get the other 2 babies as sons.

As soon as she broke open the egg, she saw a child fully developed from thigh upwards, but the lower portion towards the legs wasn’t properly developed. Thus, the premature newborn child whom we refer to as ‘Arun’ (Dawn) in Kashi Khand, Chapter 51, became very enraged at his mother’s impatience which eventually caused him a deformity. Out of anger, Arun cursed his mother that she would become a slave to the children of Kadru. Vinata pleaded with him for an apology to make her free from the curse. he then told her not to be impatient with the third egg. The child [Garud] who will bear out of this egg, will get her out of slavery.
But, Arun wanted to get rid of his deformity. He came to Kashi and started praying ceaselessly to Lord Surya, who became happy with Arun. He decided to appear and blessed Arun stating that he [arun] will always be with him (Lord Surya) as his charioteer.

After that Lord Surya said a person who worships me in the form of Arun Aditya will never witness sadness and poverty in his life and it will always remain at a distance.
According to Kashi Khand, a person who worships Arun Aditya will never fall ill and there will be no obstacles in the devotee’s smooth life. The devotee will never be in hardships.
