Kashi was home to several historic Shiva temples. The Chatur Mukheshwar Temple is one among them. Kashi Khand mentions the significance of this Temple.
Legend
According to Chapter 97 of the Kashi Khand, Goddess Parvati asked Lord Shiva about the different Teerths (Sacred Ponds) in Kashi. Lord Shiva proudly mentioned the different Shiv Lings, adding that Teerths and Shiv Lings are essentially the same things.
One Chakra Teerth and the Chakra-etched Chakreshwar Ling are mentioned in Kashi Khand, among other places. (Chakra, such as Sri Chakra, are a part of highly revered worship in honor of the Goddess; many people think Sri Chakra Pooja or Sri Yantra Pooja is extremely auspicious; these poojas should be performed with the utmost sincerity and purity, under the direct supervision of a knowledgeable Teacher/Guru.)
After death, devotees who worship Chakreshwar and take a bath in the Chakra Teerth shall enter Lord Shiva’s abode, according to Kashi Khand.
