antaḥpurākrandaḥ
In the morning, after the night had passed,
atha rātryāṁ vyatītāyāṁ prātarēvāparē:'hani
The devotees gathered around the royal abode.
vandinaḥ paryupātiṣṭhan tatpārthivanivēśanam
The skilled bards, well-versed in auspicious hymns,
sūtāḥ paramasaṁskārāḥ maṅgalāścōttamaśrutāḥ
Singers of praise, each reciting separately,
gāyakāḥ stutiśīlāśca nigadantaḥ pr̥thak pr̥thak
In praise of the kings, with lofty blessings bestowed.
rājānaṁ stuvatāṁ tēṣāmudāttābhihitāśiṣām
The sound of praise resonated throughout the spacious palace.
prāsādābhōgavistīrṇaḥ stutiśabdō hyavartata
Then, the bards, with hands raised in reverence,
tatastu stuvatāṁ tēṣāṁ sūtānāṁ pāṇivādakāḥ
Cited various examples, raising their hands in unison.
apadānānyudāhr̥tya pāṇivādā navādayan
At that sound, the birds, awakened, chirped in response,
tēna śabdēna vihagāḥ pratibuddhā visasvanuḥ
Those perched on branches and those in cages,
śākhāsthāḥ pañjarasthāśca yē rājakulagōcarāḥ
Chanted auspicious words, and the sound of veenas echoed.
vyāhr̥tāḥ puṇyaśabdāśca vīṇānāṁ cāpi nissvanāḥ
The house was filled with the essence of the songs.
āśīrgēyaṁ ca gāthānāṁ pūrayāmāsa vēśma tat
Then, the pure-hearted and knowledgeable ones gathered.
tataḥ śuci samācārāḥ paryupasthāna kōvidāḥ
The women, adorned with the best of the rainy season, approached as if they were in a city.
strīvarṣavarabhūyiṣṭhāḥ upatasthuryathāpuram
They brought water mixed with sandalwood in golden pots.
haricandana sampr̥ktamudakaṁ kāñcanaiḥ ghaṭaiḥ
They brought the knowledge of bathing at the right time and in the proper manner.
āninyuḥ snāna śikṣājñā yathākālaṁ yathāvidhi
They brought auspicious items to be offered and those meant for consumption.
maṅgalālambhanīyāni prāśanīyānyupaskarān
Thus, many young women also brought other items.
upaninyustathāpyanyāḥ kumārībahulāḥ striyaḥ
Everything was endowed with all auspicious signs and was worshipped according to the rules.
sarvalakṣaṇasampannaṁ sarvaṁ vidhivadarcitam
Everything was rich in good qualities, and that was indeed a source of prosperity.
sarvaṁ suguṇalakṣmīvattadbhabhūvābhihārikam
As long as the sun rises, all were eager to complete their tasks.
tattu sūryōdayaṁ yāvatsarvaṁ parisamutsukam
They stood there, uncertain about what to do next.
tasthāvanupasamprāptaṁ kiṁ svidityupaśaṅkitam
Then, immediately after, they approached the bed of the king of Kosala.
athayāḥ kōsalēndrasya śayanaṁ pratyanantarāḥ
The women gathered together and awakened their husband.
tāḥ striyastu samāgamya bhartāraṁ pratyabōdhayan
Thus, those women, with appropriate conduct, through humility and guidance,
tathā:'pyucitavr̥ttāstāḥ vinayēna nayēna ca
Having touched the bed of the king, did not gain anything at all.
nahyasya śayanaṁ spr̥ṣṭvā kiñcidapyupalēbhirē
Those women, knowing the nature of dreams, were engaged in movements and actions.
tāḥ strīyaḥ svapnaśīlajñāscēṣṭāsañcalanādiṣu
They were trembling with fear, anxious for the life of the king.
tā vēpathuparītāśca rājñaḥ prāṇēṣu śaṅkitāḥ
The streams of grief trembled like the grass.
pratisrōtastr̥ṇāgrāṇāṁ sadr̥śaṁ sañcakampirē
Then, seeing the earth trembling with the women in distress,
[sañcakāśirē] atha saṁvēpamānānāṁ strīṇāṁ dr̥ṣṭvā ca pārthivam
that which was feared as sin was born of certainty.
yattadāśaṅkitaṁ pāpaṁ tasya jajñē viniścayaḥ
Kausalya and Sumitra, overwhelmed by the sorrow of their sons,
kausalyā ca sumitrā ca putraśōkaparājitē
did not awaken from their slumber, as if bound by time.
prasuptē na prabudhyētē yathā kālasamanvitē
Devoid of luster and pale, they were both enveloped in grief,
niṣprabhā ca vivarṇā ca sannā śōkēna sannatā
Kausalya did not shine like a star obscured by darkness.
na vyarājata kausalyā tārēva timirāvr̥tā
Then, the goddess Sumitra, like Kausalya,
kausalyā:'nantaraṁ rājñaḥ sumitrā tadantanaram
did not shine either, her face wet with tears of sorrow.
na sma vibhrājatē dēvī śōkāśrululitānanā
Seeing them both asleep, the two goddesses and the king,
Ramayanam -
tē ca dr̥ṣṭvā tathā suptē ubhē dēvyau ca taṁ nr̥pam
the king appeared as if he were dead, his breath taken away.
Ayodhya Kanda Sarga 64 –
suptamēvōdgataprāṇamantaḥ puramadr̥śyata
Then, the sorrowful celestial maidens cried out loudly,
Ayodhya Kanda Sarga 66 –
tataḥ pracukruśurdīnāḥ sasvaraṁ tā varāṅganāḥ
the leaders of the groups, falling from their places in the forest.
