Sri Datta Nakshatra Malika
The stotra is a collection of praises to Lord Datta, focusing on his significance in the lives of devotees and the cosmic order.
श्री दत्तात्रेय स्तोत्राणि
gōdāvaryā mahānadyā uttarē siṁhaparvatē
In the holy river Godavari, on the northern Simha mountain,
गोदावर्या महानद्या उत्तरे सिंहपर्वते ।
supuṇyē māhurapurē sarvatīrthasamanvitē
In the sacred city of Mahur, endowed with all holy places,
सुपुण्ये माहुरपुरे सर्वतीर्थसमन्विते ॥ १ ॥
jajñē:'trēranasūyāyāṁ pradōṣē budhavāsarē
On the day of Pradosha, during the evening of Wednesday,
जज्ञेऽत्रेरनसूयायां प्रदोषे बुधवासरे ।
mārgaśīrṣyāṁ mahāyōgī dattātrēyō digambaraḥ
In the month of Margashirsha, the great yogi Dattatreya, the sky-clad,
मार्गशीर्ष्यां महायोगी दत्तात्रेयो दिगम्बरः ॥ २ ॥
mālāṁ kuṇḍīṁ ca ḍamaruṁ śūlaṁ śaṅkhaṁ sudarśanam
Holding a garland, a pot, a damaru, a trident, and a conch,
मालां कुण्डीं च डमरुं शूलं शङ्खं सुदर्शनम् ।
dadhānaḥ ṣaḍbhujaistryātmā yōgamārgapravartakaḥ
With six arms, the threefold soul, the initiator of the path of yoga,
दधानः षड्भुजैस्त्र्यात्मा योगमार्गप्रवर्तकः ॥ ३ ॥
bhasmōddhūlitasarvāṅgō jaṭājūṭavirājitaḥ
His entire body covered in sacred ash, adorned with matted hair,
भस्मोद्धूलितसर्वाङ्गो जटाजूटविराजितः ।
rudrākṣabhūṣitatanuḥ śāmbhavīmudrayā yutaḥ
With a body decorated with Rudraksha, endowed with the Shambhavi mudra,
रुद्राक्षभूषिततनुः शाम्भवीमुद्रया युतः ॥ ४ ॥
bhaktānugrahakr̥nnityaṁ pāpatāpārtibhañjanaḥ
Always bestowing grace upon devotees, the remover of sins and afflictions,
भक्तानुग्रहकृन्नित्यं पापतापार्तिभञ्जनः ।
bālōnmattapiśācābhaḥ smartr̥gāmī dayānidhiḥ
Like a playful child or a mad spirit, the ocean of compassion,
बालोन्मत्तपिशाचाभः स्मर्तृगामी दयानिधिः ॥ ५ ॥
yasyāsti māhurē nidrā nivāsaḥ siṁhaparvatē
In Mahur, where his abode is, sleep resides on Simha mountain,
यस्यास्ति माहुरे निद्रा निवासः सिंहपर्वते ।
prātaḥ snānaṁ ca gaṅgāyāṁ dhyānam gandharvapattanē
Morning bath in the Ganges, meditation in Gandharva city,
प्रातः स्नानं च गङ्गायां ध्यानम् गन्धर्वपत्तने ॥ ६ ॥
kurukṣētrē cācamanaṁ dhūtapāpēśvarē tathā
In Kurukshetra, sipping water, purifying from sins,
कुरुक्षेत्रे चाचमनं धूतपापेश्वरे तथा ।
vibhūtidhāraṇaṁ prātaḥsandhyā ca karahāṭakē
In the morning, holding the essence of glory, and at dusk in Karahataka,
विभूतिधारणं प्रातःसन्ध्या च करहाटके ॥ ७ ॥
kōlāpurē:'sya bhikṣā ca pāñcālē:'pi ca bhōjanam
In Kolhapur, his alms, and also food in Panchala.
कोलापुरेऽस्य भिक्षा च पाञ्चालेऽपि च भोजनम् ।
dinagō viṭhṭhalapurē tuṅgāpānaṁ dinē dinē
In the city of Vithalapura, every day is a celebration.
दिनगो विठ्ठलपुरे तुङ्गापानं दिने दिने ॥ ८ ॥ [तिलको]
[tilakō] purāṇaśravaṇaṁ yasya naranārāyaṇāśramē
The one who hears the ancient tales in the ashram of Narayana.
पुराणश्रवणं यस्य नरनारायणाश्रमे ।
viśrāmō saradē sāyaṁsandhyā paścimasāgarē
In the evening of autumn, there is rest by the western sea.
विश्रामो सरदे सायंसन्ध्या पश्चिमसागरे ॥ ९ ॥ [रैवते]
[raivatē] kārtavīryārjunāyādādyōgardhimubhayīṁ prabhuḥ
The lord who is the descendant of Kartavirya and Arjuna,
कार्तवीर्यार्जुनायादाद्योगर्धिमुभयीं प्रभुः ।
svātmatattvaṁ ca yadavē bahugurvāptamuttamam
has attained the supreme truth through many great teachers.
स्वात्मतत्त्वं च यदवे बहुगुर्वाप्तमुत्तमम् ॥ १० ॥
ānvīkṣikīmalarkāya prahlādāya tagīyatē
To the wise Prahlada, the essence of philosophy is revealed.
आन्वीक्षिकीमलर्काय प्रह्लादाय तगीयते । [च धीमते]
[ca dhīmatē] āyūrājāya ca varān sādhyēbhyō mōkṣasādhanam
For the long-lived king and the best of the sages,
आयूराजाय च वरान् साध्येभ्यो मोक्षसाधनम् ॥ ११ ॥
mantrāṁśca viṣṇudattāya sōmakāntāya karma ca
the means to liberation is the sacred mantras bestowed by Vishnu.
मन्त्रांश्च विष्णुदत्ताय सोमकान्ताय कर्म च ।
sa ēvāvirabhūdbhūyaḥ pūrvārṇavasamīpataḥ
He manifested again near the eastern ocean,
स एवाविरभूद्भूयः पूर्वार्णवसमीपतः ॥ १२ ॥
bhādrē māsi sitē pakṣē caturthyāṁ rājaviprataḥ
in the auspicious month of Bhadra, on the fourth day of the bright fortnight,
भाद्रे मासि सिते पक्षे चतुर्थ्यां राजविप्रतः ।
sumatyāṁ prāksindhutīrē ramyē pīṭhāpurē varē
in the delightful place of Pithapura, near the Sindhu river.
सुमत्यां प्राक्सिन्धुतीरे रम्ये पीठापुरे वरे ॥ १३ ॥
ya ācāravyavahr̥tiprāyaścittōpadēśakr̥t
He who is engaged in righteous conduct and teaches the essence of the mind,
य आचारव्यवहृतिप्रायश्चित्तोपदेशकृत् ।
nijāgrajāvandhapaṅgū vilōkya pravrajan sudhīḥ
seeing the blind and lame brothers, the wise one took to renunciation.
निजाग्रजावन्धपङ्गू विलोक्य प्रव्रजन् सुधीः ॥ १४ ॥
mātāpitrōrmudē dr̥ṣṭiṁ gatiṁ tābhyāmupānayat
With the gaze of his parents upon him, he directed his path.
मातापित्रोर्मुदे दृष्टिं गतिं ताभ्यामुपानयत् ।
mahīṁ pradakṣiṇīkr̥tya gōkarṇē tryabdamāvasan
Circumambulating the earth, he settled at Gokarna, near the three worlds.
महीं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य गोकर्णे त्र्यब्दमावसन् ॥ १५ ॥
tataḥ kr̥ṣṇātaṭaṁ prāpya martukāmāṁ saputrakām
Then, having reached the bank of Krishna, desiring to die and having a son,
ततः कृष्णातटं प्राप्य मर्तुकामां सपुत्रकाम् ।
nivartya brāhmaṇīṁ mandaṁ pradōṣaṁ vratamādiśat
The Brahmin woman, feeling weak, instructed to observe the vow at dusk.
निवर्त्य ब्राह्मणीं मन्दं प्रदोषं व्रतमादिशत् ॥ १६ ॥
tatputraṁ vibudhaṁ kr̥tvā tasyā janmāntarē prabhuḥ
The Lord, having made that son wise, in a previous birth,
तत्पुत्रं विबुधं कृत्वा तस्या जन्मान्तरे प्रभुः ।
putrō bhūtvā naraharināmakō dēśa uttarē
Became a son named Narahari in the northern land of Kanchana.
पुत्रो भूत्वा नरहरिनामको देश उत्तरे ॥ १७ ॥
kāñcanē nagarē:'pyambāmānayadvipadō vibhuḥ
In that city, on the second day of the bright fortnight in the month of Pausha,
काञ्चने नगरेऽप्यम्बामानयद्विपदो विभुः ।
māsi pauṣē sitē pakṣē dvitīyāyāṁ śanērdinē
Even as he was born, he cried out like a mute.
मासि पौषे सिते पक्षे द्वितीयायां शनेर्दिने ॥ १८ ॥
jātamātrō:'pi cōṅkāraṁ papāṭhāthāpi mūkavat
For seven years, the Lord, playfully remaining,
जातमात्रोऽपि चोङ्कारं पपाठाथापि मूकवत् ।
saptābdān līlayā sthitvā nānākautukakr̥t prabhuḥ
In the seventh year, himself taught the Vedas to the students.
सप्ताब्दान् लीलया स्थित्वा नानाकौतुककृत् प्रभुः ॥ १९ ॥
upanītō:'paṭhadvēdān saptamē vatsarē svayam
Comforting his mother, he bestowed two sons upon her.
उपनीतोऽपठद्वेदान् सप्तमे वत्सरे स्वयम् ।
āśvāsya jananīṁ putradvayadānēna bōdhataḥ
Going to Kashi, he practiced the eightfold yoga and worshipped Krishna-Sarasvati.
आश्वास्य जननीं पुत्रद्वयदानेन बोधतः ॥ २० ॥
kāśīṁ gatvā:'ṣṭāṅgayōgābhyāsī kr̥ṣṇasarasvatīm
Becoming a guru, he revealed the meanings of the Vedas,
काशीं गत्वाऽष्टाङ्गयोगाभ्यासी कृष्णसरस्वतीम् ।
kr̥tvā guruṁ yatirbhūtvā vēdārthān samprakāśya ca
And by that, he revived the lost renunciation in the world.
कृत्वा गुरुं यतिर्भूत्वा वेदार्थान् सम्प्रकाश्य च ॥ २१ ॥
luptasannyāsidharmaṁ ca tēnē turyāśramaṁ bhuvi
Circumambulating Mount Meru, he made many disciples,
लुप्तसन्न्यासिधर्मं च तेने तुर्याश्रमं भुवि ।
mēruṁ pradakṣiṇīkr̥tya śiṣyān kr̥tvā:'pi bhūriśaḥ
And giving a sight to his fathers, he healed the Brahmin afflicted by a painful disease.
मेरुं प्रदक्षिणीकृत्य शिष्यान् कृत्वाऽपि भूरिशः ॥ २२ ॥
pitr̥bhyāṁ darśanaṁ datvā dvijaṁ śūlarujārditam
Having made the offering and calmed the mind, I lay down near the divine, the great intellect.
पितृभ्यां दर्शनं दत्वा द्विजं शूलरुजार्दितम् ।
kr̥tvā:'nāmayamāśvāsya sāyan dēvaṁ mahāmatim
Having remained silent at the sacred place of the physician, on the banks of Krishna, then.
कृत्वाऽनामयमाश्वास्य सायन् देवं महामतिम् ॥ २३ ॥
abdaṁ sthitvā vaidyanāthakṣētrē kr̥ṣṇātaṭē tataḥ
After spending four months in the Bhillava area, the wise one then moved forward.
अब्दं स्थित्वा वैद्यनाथक्षेत्रे कृष्णातटे ततः ।
bhillavāṭyāṁ caturmāsān vibhurgatvā tatō:'grataḥ
Residing in the Nrisimha garden, he lived for twelve years.
भिल्लवाट्यां चतुर्मासान् विभुर्गत्वा ततोऽग्रतः ॥ २४ ॥
nr̥siṁhavāṭikākṣētrē dvādaśābdān vasan sudhīḥ
There, having stayed, he went to the Gandharva city and resided in the monastery.
नृसिंहवाटिकाक्षेत्रे द्वादशाब्दान् वसन् सुधीः ।
tatra sthitvā:'pi gandharvapuramētyāvasan maṭhē
Reviving the dead and milking the barren cow, Hari revealed his universal form.
तत्र स्थित्वाऽपि गन्धर्वपुरमेत्यावसन् मठे ॥ २५ ॥
jīvayitvā mr̥tān dugdhvā vandhyāṁ ca mahiṣīṁ hariḥ
Showing many human-like pastimes, he remained hidden there as well.
जीवयित्वा मृतान् दुग्ध्वा वन्ध्यां च महिषीं हरिः ।
viśvarūpaṁ darśayitvā yatayē viśvanāṭakaḥ
May the Lord Datta, who resides there, protect us always.
विश्वरूपं दर्शयित्वा यतये विश्वनाटकः ॥ २६ ॥
bahvīramānuṣīrlīlāḥ kr̥tvā guptō:'pi tatra ca
The constellation of twenty-seven verses created for the devotees,
बह्वीरमानुषीर्लीलाः कृत्वा गुप्तोऽपि तत्र च ।
ya āstē bhagavān dattaḥ sō:'smān rakṣatu sarvadā
Is offered to the devotees, distinct from the devotees of Shri Datta's satisfaction.
य आस्ते भगवान् दत्तः सोऽस्मान् रक्षतु सर्वदा ॥ २७ ॥
yā saptaviṁśatiślōkaiḥ kr̥tā nakṣatramālikā
On the twelfth day of Ashvini, in Krishna, the great festival of Shri Pada occurs.
या सप्तविंशतिश्लोकैः कृता नक्षत्रमालिका ।
tadbhaktēbhyō:'rpitā bhaktābhinnaśrīdattatuṣṭayē
In the month of Magha, on the day of Krishna, likewise, of Nrisimha, the Lord.
तद्भक्तेभ्योऽर्पिता भक्ताभिन्नश्रीदत्ततुष्टये ॥ २८ ॥
dvādaśyāmāśvinē kr̥ṣṇē śrīpādasyōtsavō mahān
