Shri Datta Ji Ki Aarti
Shri Datta Ji Ki Aarti
triguṇātmaka traimūrtī datta hā jāṇā| triguṇī avatāra trailokya rāṇā| netī netī śabda na ye anumānā||
This verse introduces Lord Dattatreya as the embodiment of the three Gunas (Sattva, Rajas, Tamas) and the Trinity (Brahma, Vishnu, Mahesh). He is the ruler of the three worlds. His true nature is beyond human comprehension and description, often expressed by the phrase 'Neti Neti' (not this, not that), signifying his transcendental essence.
suravara munijana yogī samādhī na ye dhyānā|| jaya deva jaya deva jaya śrī gurudttā|
This verse emphasizes the supreme glory of Lord Dattatreya, stating that even gods, sages, and yogis in deep meditation cannot fully comprehend or meditate upon his true form. His greatness is immeasurable, transcending the understanding of even the most devout. The chant 'Jai Dev Jai Dev Jai Shri Gurudatta' is an acclamation of victory and praise to him.
āratī ovāḷitā haralī bhavaciṁtā||
This verse describes the auspicious outcome of performing the Aarti. The devotee expresses that by offering the Aarti to Lord Dattatreya, all worldly worries and anxieties are dispelled. Performing Aarti is not merely a ritual but a means to attain liberation from the cycle of worldly existence, bringing peace and fearlessness to the mind.
sabāhya abhyaṁtarī tū eka dtta| abhāgyāsī kaicī kaḷela hi māta||
This verse highlights the omnipresence of Lord Dattatreya. The devotee proclaims that Lord Datta, you are present both externally and internally, pervading everything. You are the sole truth. However, this profound truth is difficult for the unfortunate or ignorant person, who is entangled in the illusions of the world, to comprehend.
parāhī paratalī tethe kaicā heta| janmamaraṇācāhī puralāse aṁta||
This concluding verse describes the ultimate liberation attained through the grace of Lord Dattatreya. The devotee states that where even the highest form of speech (Para Vani) turns back (meaning beyond the reach of mind and intellect), what place do other desires hold? By your grace, the cycle of birth and death also comes to an end, leading to ultimate salvation.
datta yeūniyā ūbhā ṭhākalā| bhāve sāṣṭāṁgesī praṇipāta kelā||
When devotees remember Lord Dattatreya with complete faith and devotion, He personally appears before them. The devotees then prostrate themselves at His feet, offering their entire devotion and surrender. This signifies that the Lord always heeds the call of His devotees.
prasanna hoūni āśīrvāda didhalā| janmamaraṇācā pherā cukavīlā||
Lord Dattatreya, being pleased, bestows His blessings upon His devotees. Through the power of these blessings, devotees are freed from the cycle of birth and death. This signifies the attainment of liberation (moksha) and freedom from worldly attachments, which is possible only through the grace of the Lord.
datta datta aiseṁ lāgale dhyāna| harapale mana jhāle unmana||
When devotees become absorbed in meditation, continuously chanting 'Datta, Datta', their minds become completely immersed in the Lord. In this deep state of contemplation, the mind loses its usual restlessness and attains a state of 'unman' (transcendent mind), where only the experience of the Lord prevails.
mī tū paṇācī jhālī boḷavaṇa| ekā janārdanī śrīdattadhyāna||
In this supreme state of meditation, the distinction between 'I' and 'You' (the sense of duality) vanishes. Saint Eknath, a disciple of Janardan Swami, states that by being absorbed in such contemplation of Shri Datta, one experiences non-duality (Advaita). This is the experience of the soul (Atman) becoming one with the Supreme Soul (Brahman).
