Agni Stotram (Markandeya Puranam)
The Agni Stotram is a hymn dedicated to Agni, the fire god, praising his qualities and seeking his blessings for purity and enlightenment.
शान्तिरुवाच । ओं नमः सर्वभूतानां साधनाय महात्मने ।
śāntiruvāca
Oṁ salutation to the great soul for the welfare of all beings.
एकद्विपञ्चधिष्ट्याय राजसूये षडात्मने ॥ १ ॥
ōṁ namaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ sādhanāya mahātmanē
To the one who is established in the unique and the fivefold, the lord of the royal sacrifice, the sixfold soul.
नमः समस्तदेवानां वृत्तिदाय सुवर्चसे ।
ēkadvipañcadhiṣṭyāya rājasūyē ṣaḍātmanē
Salutations to the giver of sustenance to all the gods, the radiant one,
शुक्ररूपाय जगतामशेषाणां स्थितिप्रदः ॥ २ ॥
namaḥ samastadēvānāṁ vr̥ttidāya suvarcasē
To the form of Venus, the sustainer of all worlds.
त्वं मुखं सर्वदेवानां त्वयात्तुं भगवन्हविः ।
śukrarūpāya jagatāmaśēṣāṇāṁ sthitipradaḥ
You are the face of all gods; by you, O Bhagavan, the oblation is offered.
प्रीणयत्यखिलान् देवान् त्वत्प्राणाः सर्वदेवताः ॥ ३ ॥
tvaṁ mukhaṁ sarvadēvānāṁ tvayāttuṁ bhagavanhaviḥ
You please all the gods; your life is the essence of all deities.
हुतं हविस्त्वय्यमलमेधत्वमुपगच्छति ।
prīṇayatyakhilān dēvān tvatprāṇāḥ sarvadēvatāḥ
The pure oblation offered to you is accepted by you.
ततश्च जलरूपेण परिणाममुपैति यत् ॥ ४ ॥
hutaṁ havistvayyamalamēdhatvamupagacchati
From that, it transforms into the form of water.
तेनाखिलौषधीजन्म भवत्यनिलसारथे ।
tataśca jalarūpēṇa pariṇāmamupaiti yat
Thus, all medicinal plants are born from you, O Lord of the winds.
औषधीभिरशेषाभिः सुखं जीवन्ति जन्तवः ॥ ५ ॥
tēnākhilauṣadhījanma bhavatyanilasārathē
Living beings thrive happily with the countless medicinal herbs.
वितन्वते नरा यज्ञान् त्वत्सृष्टास्वोषधीषु च ।
auṣadhībhiraśēṣābhiḥ sukhaṁ jīvanti jantavaḥ
Men perform sacrifices, and you are the origin of all plants.
यज्ञैर्देवास्तथा दैत्यास्तद्वद्रक्षांसि पावक ॥ ६ ॥
vitanvatē narā yajñān tvatsr̥ṣṭāsvōṣadhīṣu ca
Through sacrifices, both gods and demons are nourished; they are protected by the fire.
आप्याय्यन्ते च ते यज्ञास्त्वदाधारा हुताशन ।
yajñairdēvāstathā daityāstadvadrakṣāṁsi pāvaka
Those sacrifices, which are sustained by you, O Lord of the fire, are nourished.
अतः सर्वस्य योनिस्त्वं वह्ने सर्वमयस्तथा ॥ ७ ॥
āpyāyyantē ca tē yajñāstvadādhārā hutāśana
Therefore, you are the essence of everything; you are the fire that pervades all.
देवता दानवा यक्षा दैत्या गन्धर्वराक्षसाः ।
ataḥ sarvasya yōnistvaṁ vahnē sarvamayastathā
The deities, demons, yakshas, daityas, gandharvas, and rakshasas,
मानुषाः पशवो वृक्षा मृगपक्षिसरीसृपाः ॥ ८ ॥
dēvatā dānavā yakṣā daityā gandharvarākṣasāḥ
Humans, animals, trees, and all creatures with wings and limbs,
आप्याय्यन्ते त्वया सर्वे संवर्ध्यन्ते च पावक ।
mānuṣāḥ paśavō vr̥kṣā mr̥gapakṣisarīsr̥pāḥ
All are nourished by you, and they thrive through your grace,
त्वत्त एवोद्भवं यान्ति त्वय्यन्ते च तथा लयम् ॥ ९ ॥
āpyāyyantē tvayā sarvē saṁvardhyantē ca pāvaka
From you alone they arise, and into you they dissolve as well.
अपः सृजसि देव त्वं त्वमत्सि पुनरेव ताः ।
tvatta ēvōdbhavaṁ yānti tvayyantē ca tathā layam
You create the waters, O deity, and you are the same that they return to,
पच्यमानास्त्वया ताश्च प्राणिनां पुष्टिकारणम् ॥ १० ॥
apaḥ sr̥jasi dēva tvaṁ tvamatsi punarēva tāḥ
Those beings are nourished by you as they are being cooked.
देवेषु तेजोरूपेण कान्त्या सिद्धेष्ववस्थितः ।
pacyamānāstvayā tāśca prāṇināṁ puṣṭikāraṇam
In the form of deities, you reside in the essence of brilliance,
विषरूपेण नागेषु वायुरूपः पतत्त्रिषु ॥ ११ ॥
dēvēṣu tējōrūpēṇa kāntyā siddhēṣvavasthitaḥ
In the form of poison, you are present in serpents and in the wind among birds.
मनुजेषु भवान् क्रोधो मोहः पक्षिमृगादिषु ।
viṣarūpēṇa nāgēṣu vāyurūpaḥ patattriṣu
In humans, you manifest as anger and delusion, in birds and animals,
अवष्टम्भोऽसि तरुषु काठिन्यं त्वं महीं प्रति ॥ १२ ॥
manujēṣu bhavān krōdhō mōhaḥ pakṣimr̥gādiṣu
You are the rigidity in trees, and in the earth, you are the hardness.
जले द्रवत्वं भगवान् जलरूपी तथाऽनिले ।
avaṣṭambhō:'si taruṣu kāṭhinyaṁ tvaṁ mahīṁ prati
In water, you are fluidity, O blessed one, and in the sky, you take the form of air,
व्यापित्वेन तथैवाग्ने नभस्यात्मा व्यवस्थितः ॥ १३ ॥
jalē dravatvaṁ bhagavān jalarūpī tathā:'nilē
By your pervasiveness, O fire, you are established in the ether.
त्वमग्ने सर्वभूतानामन्तश्चरसि पालयन् ।
vyāpitvēna tathaivāgnē nabhasyātmā vyavasthitaḥ
You, O fire, dwell within all beings and protect them from within,
त्वामेकमाहुः कवयस्त्वामाहुस्त्रिविधं पुनः ॥ १४ ॥
tvamagnē sarvabhūtānāmantaścarasi pālayan
The wise call you the one, and they also refer to you as threefold,
त्वामष्टधा कल्पयित्वा यज्ञवाहमकल्पयन् ।
tvāmēkamāhuḥ kavayastvāmāhustrividhaṁ punaḥ
Having conceptualized you in eight forms, they perform the sacrifice with you as the offering.
त्वया सृष्टमिदं विश्वं वदन्ति परमर्षयः ॥ १५ ॥
tvāmaṣṭadhā kalpayitvā yajñavāhamakalpayan
You are the creator of this universe, say the great sages.
त्वामृते हि जगत्सर्वं सद्यो नश्येद्धुताशन ।
tvayā sr̥ṣṭamidaṁ viśvaṁ vadanti paramarṣayaḥ
For you, indeed, all the worlds will immediately perish in the fire.
तुभ्यं कृत्वा द्विजः पूजां स्वकर्मविहितां गतिम् ॥ १६ ॥
tvāmr̥tē hi jagatsarvaṁ sadyō naśyēddhutāśana
By performing the worship prescribed by their own duties, the twice-born proceed to you,
प्रयाति हव्यकव्याद्यैः स्वधास्वाहाभ्युदीरणात् ।
tubhyaṁ kr̥tvā dvijaḥ pūjāṁ svakarmavihitāṁ gatim
through offerings and invocations of the sacred fire.
परिणामात्मवीर्या हि प्राणिनाममरार्चित ॥ १७ ॥
prayāti havyakavyādyaiḥ svadhāsvāhābhyudīraṇāt
The essence of transformation is indeed the vitality of living beings, worshipped by the immortal.
दहन्ति सर्वभूतानि ततो निष्क्रम्य हेतयः ।
pariṇāmātmavīryā hi prāṇināmamarārcita
All beings are consumed by it, and thus they exit for their reasons.
जातवेदस्तवैवेयं विश्वसृष्टिमहाद्युते ॥ १८ ॥
dahanti sarvabhūtāni tatō niṣkramya hētayaḥ
O Jātaveda, this is your great radiance that creates the universe.
तवैव वैदिकं कर्म सर्वभूतात्मकं जगत् ।
jātavēdastavaivēyaṁ viśvasr̥ṣṭimahādyutē
Your Vedic actions are indeed the essence of all beings in the world.
नमस्तेऽनल पिङ्गाक्ष नमस्तेऽस्तु हुताशन ॥ १९ ॥
tavaiva vaidikaṁ karma sarvabhūtātmakaṁ jagat
Salutations to you, O one with fiery eyes; salutations to you, O Hutaśana.
पावकाद्य नमस्तेऽस्तु नमस्ते हव्यवाहन ।
namastē:'nala piṅgākṣa namastē:'stu hutāśana
Salutations to you, O Pāvaka, and salutations to you, O carrier of offerings.
त्वमेव भुक्तपीतानां पाचनाद्विश्वपावकः ॥ २० ॥
pāvakādya namastē:'stu namastē havyavāhana
You alone are the universal purifier through the cooking of those who have eaten and drunk.
शस्यानां पाककर्ता त्वं पोष्टा त्वं जगतस्तथा ।
tvamēva bhuktapītānāṁ pācanādviśvapāvakaḥ
You are the cook of grains, the nourisher, and thus you are the sustainer of the world.
त्वमेव मेघस्त्वं वायुस्त्वं बीजं शस्यहेतुकम् ॥ २१ ॥
śasyānāṁ pākakartā tvaṁ pōṣṭā tvaṁ jagatastathā
You are the cloud, you are the wind, you are the seed that causes the growth of grains.
पोषाय सर्वभूतानां भूतभव्यभवो ह्यसि ।
tvamēva mēghastvaṁ vāyustvaṁ bījaṁ śasyahētukam
You are indeed the sustainer of all beings, past, present, and future.
त्वं ज्योतिः सर्वभूतेषु त्वमादित्यो विभावसुः ॥ २२ ॥
pōṣāya sarvabhūtānāṁ bhūtabhavyabhavō hyasi
You are the light in all beings; you are the sun, O Vibhavasu.
त्वमहस्त्वं तथा रात्रिरुभे सन्ध्ये तथा भवान् ।
tvaṁ jyōtiḥ sarvabhūtēṣu tvamādityō vibhāvasuḥ
You are the night, and so is the evening; you are the cause of the golden light.
हिरण्यरेतास्त्वं वह्ने हिरण्योद्भवकारणम् ॥ २३ ॥
tvamahastvaṁ tathā rātrirubhē sandhyē tathā bhavān
You are the source of the golden fire, and you are the golden womb.
हिरण्यगर्भश्च भवान् हिरण्यसदृशप्रभः ।
hiraṇyarētāstvaṁ vahnē hiraṇyōdbhavakāraṇam
You are like the golden radiance, and you are the moment and the instant.
त्वं मुहूर्तं क्षणश्च त्वं त्वं त्रुटिस्त्वं तथा लवः ॥ २४ ॥
hiraṇyagarbhaśca bhavān hiraṇyasadr̥śaprabhaḥ
You are the break and the small fraction; you are the master of the universe.
कलाकाष्ठानिमेषादिरूपेणासि जगत्प्रभो ।
tvaṁ muhūrtaṁ kṣaṇaśca tvaṁ tvaṁ truṭistvaṁ tathā lavaḥ
You are the entirety of time, and you are the essence of transformation.
त्वमेतदखिलं कालः परिणामात्मको भवान् ॥ २५ ॥
kalākāṣṭhānimēṣādirūpēṇāsi jagatprabhō
That tongue of yours, O Lord, is the one that establishes time.
या जिह्वा भवतः काली कालनिष्ठाकरी प्रभो ।
tvamētadakhilaṁ kālaḥ pariṇāmātmakō bhavān
Protect us from sin out of fear, and from the great fear of this world.
भयान्नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ २६ ॥
yā jihvā bhavataḥ kālī kālaniṣṭhākarī prabhō
That tongue, named Karali, is the cause of the great dissolution.
कराली नाम या जिह्वा महाप्रलयकारणम् ।
bhayānnaḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
Protect us from sin out of fear, and from the great fear of this world.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ २७ ॥
karālī nāma yā jihvā mahāpralayakāraṇam
The tongue that is swift as the mind and possesses qualities of lightness.
मनोजवा च या जिह्वा लघिमागुणलक्षणा ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
Protect us from sin out of fear, and from the great fear of this world.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ २८ ॥
manōjavā ca yā jihvā laghimāguṇalakṣaṇā
That tongue, which fulfills desires for beings, is of a beautiful red color.
करोति कामं भूतेभ्यो या ते जिह्वा सुलोहिता ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
Protect us from sin out of fear, and from the great fear of this world.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ २९ ॥
karōti kāmaṁ bhūtēbhyō yā tē jihvā sulōhitā
The tongue that is dark blue in color brings suffering to living beings.
सुधूम्रवर्णा या जिह्वा प्राणिनां रोगदाहिका ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
Protect us from sins and from great fears of this world.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ ३० ॥
sudhūmravarṇā yā jihvā prāṇināṁ rōgadāhikā
The tongue that is the source of all beings, protect us from sins and from great fears.
स्फुलिङ्गिनी च या जिह्वा यतः सकलपुद्गलाः ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
O tongue, which always brings joy to living beings, protect us from sins and from great fears.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ ३१ ॥
sphuliṅginī ca yā jihvā yataḥ sakalapudgalāḥ
O one with reddish neck and dark complexion, the fire that consumes,
या ते विश्वा सदा जिह्वा प्राणिनां शर्मदायिनी ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
Save me from all faults and lift me from the cycle of existence.
तया नः पाहि पापेभ्यः ऐहिकाच्च महाभयात् ॥ ३२ ॥
yā tē viśvā sadā jihvā prāṇināṁ śarmadāyinī
Be gracious, O fire with seven rays, O slender one, the carrier of offerings.
पिङ्गाक्ष लोहितग्रीव कृष्णवर्ण हुताशन ।
tayā naḥ pāhi pāpēbhyaḥ aihikācca mahābhayāt
O Agni, who is the source of all beings, the radiant one,
त्राहि मां सर्वदोषेभ्यः संसारादुद्धरेह माम् ॥ ३३ ॥
piṅgākṣa lōhitagrīva kr̥ṣṇavarṇa hutāśana
Be gracious, O bearer of offerings, I have invoked you without fail.
प्रसीद वह्ने सप्तार्चिः कृशानो हव्यवाहन ।
trāhi māṁ sarvadōṣēbhyaḥ saṁsārāduddharēha mām
You are the imperishable fire, of unimaginable form,
अग्निपावकशुक्रादि नामाष्टभिरुदीरितः ॥ ३४ ॥
prasīda vahnē saptārciḥ kr̥śānō havyavāhana
You are the prosperous, the one who cannot be easily overcome.
अग्नेऽग्रे सर्वभूतानां समुद्भूत विभावसो ।
agnipāvakaśukrādi nāmāṣṭabhirudīritaḥ
You are the imperishable, the great one, the essence of all beings,
प्रसीद हव्यवाहाख्य अभिष्टुत मयाव्यय ॥ ३५ ॥
agnē:'grē sarvabhūtānāṁ samudbhūta vibhāvasō
You are the lotus of the heart, the infinite, the revered.
त्वमक्षयो वह्निरचिन्त्यरूपः
prasīda havyavāhākhya abhiṣṭuta mayāvyaya
Through you, this entire universe of moving and non-moving beings is sustained.
समृद्धिमन् दुष्प्रसहोऽतितीव्रः । त्वमव्ययं भीममशेषलोकं
tvamakṣayō vahniracintyarūpaḥ samr̥ddhiman duṣprasahō:'titīvraḥ
O fire, you alone manifest in many forms here.
समूर्तिको हन्त्यथवातिवीर्यः ॥ ३६ ॥
tvamavyayaṁ bhīmamaśēṣalōkaṁ samūrtikō hantyathavātivīryaḥ
You are imperishable, like the mountain and the earth.
त्वमुत्तमं सत्त्वमशेषसत्व-
tvamuttamaṁ sattvamaśēṣasatva- -hr̥tpuṇḍarīkastvamanantamīḍyam
The sky, with the moon and the sun, is all-encompassing.
-हृत्पुण्डरीकस्त्वमनन्तमीड्यम् । त्वया ततं विश्वमिदं चराचरं
tvayā tataṁ viśvamidaṁ carācaraṁ hutāśanaikō bahudhā tvamatra
You are the ocean, residing in the depths, O Lord.
हुताशनैको बहुधा त्वमत्र ॥ ३७ ॥
tvamakṣayaḥ sagirivanā vasundharā nabhaḥ sasōmārkamahardivākhilam
You are established in supreme glory.
त्वमक्षयः सगिरिवना वसुन्धरा
mahōdadhērjaṭharagatañca vāḍavō bhavānvibhūtyā parayā karē sthitaḥ
You are always worshipped as the fire god.
नभः ससोमार्कमहर्दिवाखिलम् । महोदधेर्जठरगतञ्च वाडवो
hutāśanastvamiti sadābhipūjyasē mahākratau niyamaparairmaharṣibhiḥ
By the great sages, who are bound by vows,
भवान्विभूत्या परया करे स्थितः ॥ ३८ ॥
abhiṣṭutaḥ pivasi ca sōmamadhvarē vaṣaṭkr̥tānyapi ca havīṁ-ṣi bhūtayē
You are praised and you drink the soma of the sacrifices.
हुताशनस्त्वमिति सदाभिपूज्यसे
tvaṁ vipraiḥ satatamihējyasē phalārthaṁ vēdāṅgēṣvatha sakalēṣu gīyasē tvam
Even the offerings made with the sacred word "vaṣaṭ" are for you,
महाक्रतौ नियमपरैर्महर्षिभिः । अभिष्टुतः पिवसि च सोममध्वरे
tvaddhētōryajanaparāyaṇā dvijēndrā vēdāṅgānyadhigamayanti sarvakālē
You are continually worshipped by the learned for the fruits of their actions.
वषट्कृतान्यपि च हवींषि भूतये ॥ ३९ ॥
tvaṁ brahmā yajanaparastathaiva viṣṇuḥ bhūtēśaḥ surapatiraryamā jalēśaḥ
You are sung in all the branches of the Vedas.
त्वं विप्रैः सततमिहेज्यसे फलार्थं
sūryēndu sakalasurāsurāśca havyaiḥ santōṣyābhimataphalānyathāpnuvanti
O Lord, you are the essence of the Vedas, the foremost among the twice-born.
वेदाङ्गेष्वथ सकलेषु गीयसे त्वम् । त्वद्धेतोर्यजनपरायणा द्विजेन्द्रा
arcirbhiḥ paramamahōpaghātaduṣṭaṁ saṁspr̥ṣṭaṁ tava śuci jāyatē samastam
The Vedas reveal your essence at all times.
वेदाङ्गान्यधिगमयन्ति सर्वकाले ॥ ४० ॥
snānānāṁ paramamatīva bhasmanā sat sandhyāyāṁ munibhiratīva sēvyasē tat
You are Brahma, the one who is worshipped, and also Vishnu.
त्वं ब्रह्मा यजनपरस्तथैव विष्णुः
prasīda vahnē śucināmadhēya prasīda vāyō vimalātidīptē
You are the Lord of all beings, the king of the gods, the ruler of waters.
भूतेशः सुरपतिरर्यमा जलेशः । सूर्येन्दु सकलसुरासुराश्च हव्यैः
prasīda mē pāvaka vaidyutādya prasīda havyāśana pāhi māṁ tvam
With offerings from the sun and the moon, all gods and demons are satisfied.
सन्तोष्याभिमतफलान्यथाप्नुवन्ति ॥ ४१ ॥
yattē vahnē śivaṁ rūpaṁ yē ca tē sapta hētayaḥ
They attain their desired fruits as they wish.
अर्चिर्भिः परममहोपघातदुष्टं
taḥ pāhi naḥ stutō dēva pitā putramivātmajam
The fire, which is the supreme purifier, is touched by you.
संस्पृष्टं तव शुचि जायते समस्तम् । स्नानानां परममतीव भस्मना सत्
iti śrīmārkaṇḍēyapurāṇē bhautyamanvantarē agni stōtram nāma ēkōnaśatō:'dhyāyaḥ
All that is pure is born from you.
