Ashtamurti Ashtakam
The Ashtamurti Ashtakam consists of verses that praise the eight forms of Lord Shiva, highlighting their unique attributes and the importance of devotion.
तुष्टावाष्टतनुं हृष्टः प्रफुल्लनयनाचलः । मौलावञ्जलिमाधाय वदन् जय जयेति च ॥ १ ॥
tuṣṭāvāṣṭatanuṁ hr̥ṣṭaḥ praphullanayanācalaḥ
The eight verses of praise to Lord Shiva are recited with joy, as the one with radiant eyes raises his hands in reverence, proclaiming victory.
भार्गव उवाच । त्वं भाभिराभिरभिभूय तमः समस्त-
maulāvañjalimādhāya vadan jaya jayēti ca
Bharadvaja spoke:
-मस्तं नयस्यभिमतानि निशाचराणाम् । देदीप्यसे दिवमणे गगने हिताय
bhārgava uvāca
You, who overcome darkness with your brilliance, guide the desires of all creatures of the night.
लोकत्रयस्य जगदीश्वर तन्नमस्ते ॥ २ ॥
tvaṁ bhābhirābhirabhibhūya tamaḥ samasta- -mastaṁ nayasyabhimatāni niśācarāṇām
You shine in the heavens for the benefit of the three worlds; I bow to you, the Lord of the Universe.
लोकेऽतिवेलमतिवेलमहामहोभि-
dēdīpyasē divamaṇē gaganē hitāya lōkatrayasya jagadīśvara tannamastē
In this world, who can illuminate the sky with such great brilliance?
-र्निर्भासि कौ च गगनेऽखिललोकनेत्र । विद्राविताखिलतमाः सुतमो हिमांशो
lōkē:'tivēlamativēlamahāmahōbhi- -rnirbhāsi kau ca gaganē:'khilalōkanētra
You, the son of the Himalayas, are filled with the nectar of life; I bow to you.
पीयूषपूर परिपूरित तन्नमस्ते ॥ ३ ॥
vidrāvitākhilatamāḥ sutamō himāṁśō pīyūṣapūra paripūrita tannamastē
You are always worshipped on the path of purity; without you, who can live in this world?
त्वं पावने पथि सदागतिरप्युपास्यः
tvaṁ pāvanē pathi sadāgatirapyupāsyaḥ kastvāṁ vinā bhuvana jīvana jīvatīha
You, who enhance the existence of all beings, are indeed worthy of reverence.
कस्त्वां विना भुवन जीवन जीवतीह । स्तब्धप्रभञ्जनविवर्धितसर्वजन्तो
stabdhaprabhañjanavivardhitasarvajantō santōṣitāhikula sarvaga vai namastē
O universal purifier, you alone perform divine deeds; I bow to you, the essence of all.
सन्तोषिताहिकुल सर्वग वै नमस्ते ॥ ४ ॥
viśvaikapāvaka na tāvakapāvakaika- -śaktērr̥tē mr̥tavatāmr̥tadivyakāryam
You are the eternal source of life, the inner soul of the universe; I bow to you, the one who brings peace.
विश्वैकपावक न तावकपावकैक-
prāṇityadō jagadahō jagadantarātmaṁ- -stvaṁ pāvakaḥ pratipadaṁ śamadō namastē
You, the supreme being, are the essence of purity; indeed, you are the Lord of the universe.
-शक्तेरृते मृतवतामृतदिव्यकार्यम् । प्राणित्यदो जगदहो जगदन्तरात्मं-
pānīyarūpa paramēśa jagatpavitra citrāticitrasucaritrakarō:'si nūnam
I bow to you, who are the embodiment of all that is pure and untainted.
-स्त्वं पावकः प्रतिपदं शमदो नमस्ते ॥ ५ ॥
viśvaṁ pavitramamalaṁ kila viśvanātha pānīyagāhanata ētadatō natō:'smi
You, who are the source of all existence, are the one I humbly bow to.
पानीयरूप परमेश जगत्पवित्र
ākāśarūpa bahirantarutāvakāśa- -dānādvikasvaramihēśvara viśvamētat
O Lord of the universe, who embodies the essence of all,
चित्रातिचित्रसुचरित्रकरोऽसि नूनम् । विश्वं पवित्रममलं किल विश्वनाथ
tvattaḥ sadā sadaya saṁśvasiti svabhāvā- -tsaṅkōcamēti bhavatō:'smi natastatastvām
Who is the Lord of all beings, what is your ultimate form?
पानीयगाहनत एतदतो नतोऽस्मि ॥ ६ ॥
viśvambharātmaka bibharṣi vibhōtra viśvaṁ kō viśvanātha bhavatō:'nyatamastamō:'riḥ
You, who remove the darkness of ignorance,
आकाशरूप बहिरन्तरुतावकाश-
sa tvaṁ vināśaya tamō mama cāhibhūṣa stavyātparaḥ paraparaṁ praṇatastatastvām
I bow to you, the supreme being, the one who is beyond all.
-दानाद्विकस्वरमिहेश्वर विश्वमेतत् । त्वत्तः सदा सदय संश्वसिति स्वभावा-
ātmasvarūpa tavarūpa paramparābhi- -rābhistataṁ hara carācararūpamētat
You are the essence of the universe, the form of all beings,
-त्सङ्कोचमेति भवतोऽस्मि नतस्ततस्त्वाम् ॥ ७ ॥
sarvāntarātmanilaya pratirūparūpa nityaṁ natō:'smi paramātmajanō:'ṣṭamūrtē
In you resides the eternal soul, the true nature of all.
विश्वम्भरात्मक बिभर्षि विभोत्र विश्वं
ityaṣṭamūrtibhirimābhirabandhabandhō yuktaḥ karōṣi khalu viśvajanīnamūrtē
I am eternally devoted to you, the supreme soul, the eighth form.
को विश्वनाथ भवतोऽन्यतमस्तमोऽरिः । स त्वं विनाशय तमो मम चाहिभूष
ētattataṁ suvitataṁ praṇatapraṇīta sarvārthasārthaparamārtha tatō natō:'smi
With these eight forms, you are the bond of all beings.
स्तव्यात्परः परपरं प्रणतस्ततस्त्वाम् ॥ ८ ॥
aṣṭamūrtyaṣṭakēnētthaṁ pariṣṭutyēti bhārgavaḥ
Indeed, you are the creator of the universe, the embodiment of all.
आत्मस्वरूप तवरूप परम्पराभि-
bhargaṁ bhūmimilanmauliḥ praṇanāma punaḥ punaḥ
Thus, I humbly bow to you, the essence of all truths.
-राभिस्ततं हर चराचररूपमेतत् । सर्वान्तरात्मनिलय प्रतिरूपरूप
iti śivamahāpurāṇē rudrasaṁhitāyāṁ yuddhakhaṇḍē pañcāśattamō:'dhyāyē śukrācāryakr̥ta aṣṭamūrtyaṣṭakam
