Asitha Krutha Shiva Stotram
The stotram expresses devotion to Lord Shiva and seeks his grace for alleviating troubles.
असित उवाच –
asita uvāca – jagadgurō namastubhyaṁ śivāya śivadāya ca
O Jagadguru, I bow to you, O Shiva, the giver of auspiciousness.
जगद्गुरो नमस्तुभ्यं शिवाय शिवदाय च ।
yōgīndrāṇāṁ ca yōgīndra gurūṇāṁ guravē namaḥ
Salutations to the Gurus of the Yogis, the supreme among Yogis.
योगीन्द्राणां च योगीन्द्र गुरूणां गुरवे नमः ॥ १ ॥
mr̥tyōrmr̥tyusvarūpēṇa mr̥tyusaṁsārakhaṇḍana
With the form of death, you destroy the cycle of birth and death.
मृत्योर्मृत्युस्वरूपेण मृत्युसंसारखण्डन ।
mr̥tyōrīśa mr̥tyubīja mr̥tyuñjaya namō:'stu tē
O Lord of death, O seed of death, O conqueror of death, I bow to you.
मृत्योरीश मृत्युबीज मृत्युञ्जय नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ २ ॥
kālarūpaḥ kalayatāṁ kālakālēśa kāraṇa
You are the embodiment of time, the cause of all, the Lord of time.
कालरूपः कलयतां कालकालेश कारण ।
kālādatīta kālastha kālakāla namō:'stu tē
I bow to you, who transcends time and exists beyond time.
कालादतीत कालस्थ कालकाल नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ ३ ॥
guṇātīta guṇādhāra guṇabīja guṇātmaka
You are beyond qualities, the support of qualities, the essence of qualities.
गुणातीत गुणाधार गुणबीज गुणात्मक ।
guṇīśa guṇināṁ bīja guṇināṁ guravē namaḥ
Salutations to the Lord of qualities, the seed of the virtuous, the Guru of the virtuous.
गुणीश गुणिनां बीज गुणिनां गुरवे नमः ॥ ४ ॥
brahmasvarūpa brahmajña brahmabhāvanatatparaḥ
You are the embodiment of Brahman, the knower of Brahman, devoted to the contemplation of Brahman.
ब्रह्मस्वरूप ब्रह्मज्ञ ब्रह्मभावनतत्परः ।
brahmabījasvarūpēṇa brahmabīja namō:'stu tē
I bow to you, who is the essence of the seed of Brahman.
ब्रह्मबीजस्वरूपेण ब्रह्मबीज नमोऽस्तु ते ॥ ५ ॥
iti stutvā śivaṁ natvā purastasthau munīśvaraḥ
Thus, having praised Shiva and bowed down, the great sage stood before him.
इति स्तुत्वा शिवं नत्वा पुरस्तस्थौ मुनीश्वरः ।
dīnavatsā:'śrunētraśca pulakāñcitavigrahaḥ
With a humble heart and a body adorned with goosebumps, he appeared.
दीनवत्साऽश्रुनेत्रश्च पुलकाञ्चितविग्रहः ॥ ६ ॥
asitēna kr̥taṁ stōtram bhaktiyuktaśca yaḥ paṭhēt
Whoever recites this hymn composed by Asita with devotion,
असितेन कृतं स्तोत्रम् भक्तियुक्तश्च यः पठेत् ।
varṣamēkaṁ haviṣyāśī śaṅkarasya mahātmanaḥ
Will attain a son who is a devotee of Vishnu, wise, and long-lived.
वर्षमेकं हविष्याशी शङ्करस्य महात्मनः ॥ ७ ॥
sa labhēdvaiṣṇavaṁ putraṁ jñāninaṁ cirajīvinam
A wealthy person may be unhappy, and a learned person may be mute.
स लभेद्वैष्णवं पुत्रं ज्ञानिनं चिरजीविनम् ।
bhavēddhanāḍhyō:'duḥkhī ca mūkō bhavati paṇḍitaḥ
A bachelor obtains a wife who is virtuous and devoted to her husband.
भवेद्धनाढ्योऽदुःखी च मूको भवति पण्डितः ॥ ८ ॥
abhāryō labhatē bhāryāṁ suśīlāṁ ca pativratām
Having enjoyed happiness in this world, one ultimately goes to the presence of Shiva.
अभार्यो लभते भार्यां सुशीलां च पतिव्रताम् ।
iha lōkē sukhaṁ bhuktvā yātyantē śivasannidhim
This hymn was given in ancient times by Brahma to the sage Pracetas.
इह लोके सुखं भुक्त्वा यात्यन्ते शिवसन्निधिम् ॥ ९ ॥
idaṁ stōtraṁ purā dattaṁ brahmaṇā ca pracētasē
It was given to his son, who was seated, as the best gift.
इदं स्तोत्रं पुरा दत्तं ब्रह्मणा च प्रचेतसे ।
pracētasā svaputrāyāsitāya dattamuttamam
Thus, in the Brahmavaivarta Purana, in the section on the birth of Lord Krishna, is the hymn to Shiva composed by Asita.
प्रचेतसा स्वपुत्रायासिताय दत्तमुत्तमम् ॥ १० ॥
