Atma Panchakam
The Atma Panchakam is a stotra that explores the nature of the self and emphasizes the importance of self-awareness and realization in the pursuit of spiritual liberation.
नाऽहं देहो नेन्द्रियाण्यन्तरङ्गं
nā:'haṁ dēhō nēndriyāṇyantaraṅgaṁ nā:'haṅkāraḥ prāṇavargō na cā:'ham
I am not the body, nor the senses, nor the inner organs.
नाऽहङ्कारः प्राणवर्गो न चाऽहम् ।
dārāpatyakṣētravittādidūra- ssākṣī nityaḥ pratyagātmā śivō:'ham
I am not the ego, nor the life force; I am not that.
दारापत्यक्षेत्रवित्तादिदूर-
rajjvajñānādbhāti rajjuryathā hi- ssvātmājñānādātmanō jīvabhāvaḥ
I am the witness, eternal, the self of Shiva, far removed from wife, property, and fields.
स्साक्षी नित्यः प्रत्यगात्मा शिवोऽहम् ॥ १ ॥
āptōktyā hi bhrāntināśē sa rajju- rjīvō nā:'haṁ dēśikōktyā śivō:'ham
Like the rope appears as a snake due to ignorance,
रज्ज्वज्ञानाद्भाति रज्जुर्यथा हि-
abhātīdaṁ viśvamātmanyasatyaṁ satyajñānānandarūpē vimōhāt
the state of being alive arises from the ignorance of the self.
स्स्वात्माज्ञानादात्मनो जीवभावः ।
nidrāmōhā-tsvapnavattanna sattyaṁ śuddhaḥ pūrṇō nitya ēkaśśivō:'ham
By the statement of the wise, the rope is not a snake;
आप्तोक्त्या हि भ्रान्तिनाशे स रज्जु-
mattō nānyatkiñcidatrāpti viśvaṁ satyaṁ bāhyaṁ vastumāyōpakluptam
I am not the individual, I am Shiva.
र्जीवो नाऽहं देशिकोक्त्या शिवोऽहम् ॥ २ ॥
ādarśāntarbhāsamānasya tulyaṁ mayyadvaitē bhāti tasmācchivō:'ham
This universe appears as false in the true self,
अभातीदं विश्वमात्मन्यसत्यं
nā:'haṁ jātō na pravr̥ddhō na naṣṭō dēhasyōktāḥ prākr̥tāssarvadharmāḥ
in the form of knowledge, bliss, and freedom from delusion.
सत्यज्ञानानन्दरूपे विमोहात् ।
kartr̥tvādi-ścinmayasyāsti nā:'haṁ kārasyaiva hyātmanō mē śivō:'ham
The state of sleep and the dream is not the truth;
निद्रामोहा-त्स्वप्नवत्तन्न सत्त्यं
nā:'haṁ jātō janmamr̥tyuḥ kutō mē nā:'haṁ prāṇaḥ kṣutpipāsē kutō mē
I am pure, complete, eternal, one, I am Shiva.
शुद्धः पूर्णो नित्य एकश्शिवोऽहम् ॥ ३ ॥
nā:'haṁ cittaṁ śōkamōhau kutō mē nā:'haṁ kartā bandhamōkṣau kutō mē
I have no desire for anything else in this universe;
मत्तो नान्यत्किञ्चिदत्राप्ति विश्वं
iti śrīmacchaṅkarabhavatpādācārya svāmi viracitātmapañcakam
the truth is external, appearing as an illusion.
