Bilvashtakam 1
The stotra consists of eight verses that extol the significance of the bilva leaf in worshiping Lord Shiva, highlighting its spiritual and material benefits.
त्रिदलं त्रिगुणाकारं त्रिनेत्रं च त्रियायुधम् । त्रिजन्मपापसंहारं एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ १ ॥
tridalaṁ triguṇākāraṁ trinētraṁ ca triyāyudham
The three-leaved, three-gunned, with three eyes, and holding three weapons,
त्रिशाखैर्बिल्वपत्रैश्च ह्यच्छिद्रैः कोमलैः शुभैः । शिवपूजां करिष्यामि एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ २ ॥
trijanmapāpasaṁhāraṁ ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
The remover of the sins of three births, I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva.
अखण्डबिल्वपत्रेण पूजिते नन्दिकेश्वरे । शुद्ध्यन्ति सर्वपापेभ्यः एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ३ ॥
triśākhairbilvapatraiśca hyacchidraiḥ kōmalaiḥ śubhaiḥ
With three branches of bilva leaves, tender and auspicious,
सालग्रामशिलामेकां जातु विप्राय योऽर्पयेत् । सोमयज्ञमहापुण्यं एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ४ ॥
śivapūjāṁ kariṣyāmi ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
I will perform the worship of Shiva, offering one bilva leaf.
दन्तिकोटिसहस्राणि वाजपेयशतानि च । कोटिकन्यामहादानां एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ५ ॥
akhaṇḍabilvapatrēṇa pūjitē nandikēśvarē
When worshipped with the unbroken bilva leaf, Nandikeshvara is pleased,
पार्वत्याः स्वेदसञ्जातं महादेवस्य च प्रियम् । बिल्ववृक्षं नमस्यामि एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ६ ॥
śuddhyanti sarvapāpēbhyaḥ ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
The offering of one bilva leaf purifies all sins.
दर्शनं बिल्ववृक्षस्य स्पर्शनं पापनाशनम् । अघोरपापसंहारं एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ७ ॥
sālagrāmaśilāmēkāṁ jātu viprāya yō:'rpayēt
To the solitary Salagrama stone, one should offer,
मूलतो ब्रह्मरूपाय मध्यतो विष्णुरूपिणे । अग्रतः शिवरूपाय एकबिल्वं शिवार्पणम् ॥ ८ ॥
sōmayajñamahāpuṇyaṁ ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
The great merit of the Soma sacrifice is in the offering of one bilva leaf.
बिल्वाष्टकमिदं पुण्यं यः पठेच्छिवसन्निधौ । सर्वपापविनिर्मुक्तः शिवलोकमवाप्नुयात् ॥ ९ ॥
dantikōṭisahasrāṇi vājapēyaśatāni ca
Countless thousands of elephants and hundreds of horse sacrifices,
इति बिल्वाष्टकम् ॥
kōṭikanyāmahādānāṁ ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
The offering of one bilva leaf is greater than millions of donations of maidens.
विविध स्तोत्राणि
pārvatyāḥ svēdasañjātaṁ mahādēvasya ca priyam
I bow to the bilva tree, which is born from the sweat of Parvati and dear to the great god,
Pradoshastotra ashtakam – प्रदोषस्तोत्राष्टकम्
bilvavr̥kṣaṁ namasyāmi ēkabilvaṁ śivārpaṇam
The sight of the bilva tree and its touch destroys sins,
Maha mrityunjaya stotram – महामृत्युञ्जय स्तोत्रम्
darśanaṁ bilvavr̥kṣasya sparśanaṁ pāpanāśanam
The offering of one bilva leaf removes the terrible sins.
