Ishana Stuti
The Ishana Stuti is a hymn that extols the virtues of Lord Shiva, invoking his blessings for wisdom, protection, and spiritual enlightenment.
रुद्राध्याय स्तुतिः (शतरुद्रीयम्) >>
(rudrādhyāya stutiḥ (śatarudrīyam) >> ) vyāsa uvāca
The first among the lords of creation, the supreme being of brilliance,
व्यास उवाच ।
prajāpatīnāṁ prathamaṁ tējasāṁ puruṣaṁ prabhum
The deity of the worlds, the lord of all realms,
प्रजापतीनां प्रथमं तेजसां पुरुषं प्रभुम् । भुवनं भूर्भुवं देवं सर्वलोकेश्वरं प्रभुम् ॥ १ ॥
bhuvanaṁ bhūrbhuvaṁ dēvaṁ sarvalōkēśvaraṁ prabhum
O Partha, you have seen Ishana, the granter of boons,
ईशानं वरदं पार्थ दृष्टवानसि शङ्करम् । तं गच्छ शरणं देवं वरदं भुवनेश्वरम् ॥ २ ॥
īśānaṁ varadaṁ pārtha dr̥ṣṭavānasi śaṅkaram
Go to that divine refuge, the granter of boons, the lord of the universe.
महादेवं महात्मानमीशानं जटिलं शिवम् । त्र्यक्षं महाभुजं रुद्रं शिखिनं चीरवाससम् ॥ ३ ॥
taṁ gaccha śaraṇaṁ dēvaṁ varadaṁ bhuvanēśvaram
The great god, the great-souled one, Ishana, the ascetic, Shiva,
महादेवं हरं स्थाणुं वरदं भुवनेश्वरम् । जगत्प्रधानमधिकं जगत्प्रीतमधीश्वरम् ॥ ४ ॥
mahādēvaṁ mahātmānamīśānaṁ jaṭilaṁ śivam
The three-eyed one, the one with mighty arms, Rudra, clad in matted hair,
जगद्योनिं जगद्द्वीपं जयिनं जगतो गतिम् । विश्वात्मानां विश्वसृजं विश्वमूर्तिं यशस्विनम् ॥ ५ ॥
tryakṣaṁ mahābhujaṁ rudraṁ śikhinaṁ cīravāsasam
The great god, the remover of obstacles, the granter of boons, the lord of the universe,
विश्वेश्वरं विश्वनरं कर्मणामीश्वरं प्रभुम् । शम्भुं स्वयम्भुं भूतेशं भूतभव्यभवोद्भवम् ॥ ६ ॥
mahādēvaṁ haraṁ sthāṇuṁ varadaṁ bhuvanēśvaram
The supreme being of the world, the one who is more than the world, the lord of delight,
योगं योगेश्वरं सर्वं सर्वलोकेश्वरेश्वरम् । सर्वश्रेष्ठं जगच्छ्रेष्ठं वरिष्ठं परमेष्ठिनम् ॥ ७ ॥
jagatpradhānamadhikaṁ jagatprītamadhīśvaram
The source of the universe, the island of the world, the conqueror, the path of the world,
लोकत्रयविधातारमेकं लोकत्रयाश्रयम् । सुदुर्जयं जगन्नाथं जन्ममृत्युजरातिगम् ॥ ८ ॥
jagadyōniṁ jagaddvīpaṁ jayinaṁ jagatō gatim
The universal soul, the creator of all, the embodiment of the universe, the glorious one,
ज्ञानात्मानं ज्ञानगम्यं ज्ञानश्रेष्ठं सुदुर्विदम् । दातारं चैव भक्तानां प्रसादविहितान् वरान् ॥ ९ ॥
viśvātmānāṁ viśvasr̥jaṁ viśvamūrtiṁ yaśasvinam
The lord of all beings, the lord of all actions, the supreme being,
तस्य पारिषदा दिव्या रूपैर्नानाविधैर्विभोः । वामना जटिला मुण्डा ह्रस्वग्रीवा महोदराः ॥ १० ॥
viśvēśvaraṁ viśvanaraṁ karmaṇāmīśvaraṁ prabhum
Shambhu, self-born, lord of beings, the source of past, present, and future,
महाकाया महोत्साहा महाकर्णास्तथापरे । अननैर्विकृतैः पादैः पार्थ वेषैश्च वैकृतैः ॥ ११ ॥
śambhuṁ svayambhuṁ bhūtēśaṁ bhūtabhavyabhavōdbhavam
The essence of yoga, the lord of yogis, the all, the supreme lord of all realms,
ईदृशैः स महादेवः पूज्यमानो महेश्वरः । स शिवस्तात तेजस्वी प्रसादाद्याति तेऽग्रतः ॥ १२ ॥
yōgaṁ yōgēśvaraṁ sarvaṁ sarvalōkēśvarēśvaram
The highest of all, the best of the world, the supreme among the supreme.
तस्मिन् घोरे सदा पार्थ सङ्ग्रामे लोमहर्षणे । द्रौणिकर्णकृपैर्गुप्तां महेष्वासैः प्रहारिभिः ॥ १३ ॥
sarvaśrēṣṭhaṁ jagacchrēṣṭhaṁ variṣṭhaṁ paramēṣṭhinam
The one who creates the three worlds, the sole refuge of the three worlds,
कस्तां सेनां तदा पार्थ मनसापि प्रधर्षयेत् । ऋते देवान्महेष्वासाद्बहुरूपान्महेश्वरात् ॥ १४ ॥
lōkatrayavidhātāramēkaṁ lōkatrayāśrayam
Difficult to conquer, the Lord of the universe, who transcends birth, death, and old age.
स्थातुमुत्सहते कश्चिन्न तस्मिन्नग्रतः स्थिते । न हि भूतं समं तेन त्रिषु लोकेषु विद्यते ॥ १५ ॥
sudurjayaṁ jagannāthaṁ janmamr̥tyujarātigam
The essence of knowledge, attainable through knowledge, the supreme knowledge, very hard to comprehend,
गन्धेनापि हि सङ्ग्रामे तस्य क्रुद्धस्य शत्रवः । विसञ्ज्ञा हतभूयिष्ठा वेपन्ति च पतन्ति च ॥ १६ ॥
jñānātmānaṁ jñānagamyaṁ jñānaśrēṣṭhaṁ sudurvidam
The giver of boons to the devotees, bestowed with divine grace and excellent gifts.
तस्मै नमस्तु कुर्वन्तो देवास्तिष्ठन्ति वै दिवि । ये चान्ये मानवा लोके ये च स्वर्गजितो नराः ॥ १७ ॥
dātāraṁ caiva bhaktānāṁ prasādavihitān varān
His divine retinue, with various forms,
ये भक्ता वरदं देवं शिवं रुद्रमुमापतिम् । इह लोके सुखं प्राप्य ते यान्ति परमां गतिम् ॥ १८ ॥
tasya pāriṣadā divyā rūpairnānāvidhairvibhōḥ
Vamana, ascetic, shaven-headed, short-necked, and great-bodied,
नमस्कुरुष्व कौन्तेय तस्मै शान्ताय वै सदा । रुद्राय शितिकण्ठाय कनिष्ठाय सुवर्चसे ॥ १९ ॥
vāmanā jaṭilā muṇḍā hrasvagrīvā mahōdarāḥ
Great in stature, great in enthusiasm, great-eared, and others like them,
कपर्दिने करालाय हर्यक्ष वरदाय च । याम्यायारक्तकेशाय सद्वृत्ते शङ्कराय च ॥ २० ॥
mahākāyā mahōtsāhā mahākarṇāstathāparē
With feet that are unchanging and forms that are diverse, O Partha,
काम्याय हरिनेत्राय स्थाणवे पुरुषाय च । हरिकेशाय मुण्डाय कनिष्ठाय सुवर्चसे ॥ २१ ॥
ananairvikr̥taiḥ pādaiḥ pārtha vēṣaiśca vaikr̥taiḥ
Such is that great deity, revered and honored, the great lord.
भास्कराय सुतीर्थाय देवदेवाय रंहसे । बहुरूपाय शर्वाय प्रियाय प्रियवाससे ॥ २२ ॥
īdr̥śaiḥ sa mahādēvaḥ pūjyamānō mahēśvaraḥ
He, Shiva, is indeed radiant, bestowing grace and blessings upon you.
उष्णीषिणे सुवक्त्राय सहस्राक्षाय मीढुषे । गिरिशाय सुशान्ताय पतये चीरवाससे ॥ २३ ॥
sa śivastāta tējasvī prasādādyāti tē:'grataḥ
In that fierce battlefield, O Partha, in the clashing of arms,
हिरण्यबाहवे राजन्नुग्राय पतये दिशाम् । पर्जन्यपतये चैव भूतानां पतये नमः ॥ २४ ॥
tasmin ghōrē sadā pārtha saṅgrāmē lōmaharṣaṇē
Concealed by the great archers, Drona and Karna, with their powerful strikes,
वृक्षाणां पतये चैव गवां च पतये तथा । वृक्षैरावृतकायाय सेनान्ये मध्यमाय च ॥ २५ ॥
drauṇikarṇakr̥pairguptāṁ mahēṣvāsaiḥ prahāribhiḥ
Who could then, O Partha, even in thought, challenge that army?
श्रुवहस्ताय देवाय धन्विने भार्गवाय च । बहुरूपाय विश्वस्य पतये मुञ्जवाससे ॥ २६ ॥
kastāṁ sēnāṁ tadā pārtha manasāpi pradharṣayēt
Except for the great archers and the many forms of the great lord,
सहस्रशिरसे चैव सहस्रनयनाय च । सहस्रबाहवे चैव सहस्रचरणाय च ॥ २७ ॥
r̥tē dēvānmahēṣvāsādbahurūpānmahēśvarāt
No one dares to stand before him in that place.
शरणं गच्छ कौन्तेय वरदं भुवनेश्वरम् । उमापतिं विरूपाक्षं दक्षयज्ञनिबर्हणम् ॥ २८ ॥
sthātumutsahatē kaścinna tasminnagrataḥ sthitē
There is no being equal to him in the three worlds.
प्रजानां पतिमव्यग्रं भूतानां पतिमव्ययम् । कपर्दिनं वृषावर्तं वृषनाभं वृषध्वजम् ॥ २९ ॥
na hi bhūtaṁ samaṁ tēna triṣu lōkēṣu vidyatē
Even in battle, the enemies tremble and fall before his anger.
वृषदर्पं वृषपतिं वृषशृङ्गं वृषर्षभम् । वृषाङ्कं वृषभोदारं वृषभं वृषभेक्षणम् ॥ ३० ॥
gandhēnāpi hi saṅgrāmē tasya kruddhasya śatravaḥ
Those who are unconscious, the most powerful, they tremble and fall.
वृषायुधं वृषशरं वृषभूतं महेश्वरम् । महोदरं महाकायं द्वीपिचर्मनिवासिनम् ॥ ३१ ॥
visañjñā hatabhūyiṣṭhā vēpanti ca patanti ca
To him, I bow; the gods indeed reside in heaven.
लोकेशं वरदं मुण्डं ब्रह्मण्यं ब्राह्मणप्रियम् । त्रिशूलपाणिं वरदं खड्गचर्मधरं शुभम् ॥ ३२ ॥
tasmai namastu kurvantō dēvāstiṣṭhanti vai divi
Those other humans in the world, those who have conquered heaven,
पिनाकिनं खण्डपर्शुं लोकानां पतिमीश्वरम् । [खड्गधरं]
yē cānyē mānavā lōkē yē ca svargajitō narāḥ
Those devotees of the boon-giving god, Shiva, Rudra, the consort of Uma,
प्रपद्ये देवमीशानं शरण्यं चीरवाससम् ॥ ३३ ॥
yē bhaktā varadaṁ dēvaṁ śivaṁ rudramumāpatim
Having attained happiness in this world, they go to the supreme destination.
नमस्तस्मै सुरेशाय यस्य वैश्रवणः सखा । सुवाससे नमो नित्यं सुव्रताय सुधन्विने ॥ ३४ ॥
iha lōkē sukhaṁ prāpya tē yānti paramāṁ gatim
Bow down, O Kaunteya, to him who is always peaceful.
धनुर्धराय देवय प्रियधन्वाय धन्विने । धन्वन्तराय धनुषे धन्वाचार्याय ते नमः ॥ ३५ ॥
namaskuruṣva kauntēya tasmai śāntāya vai sadā
To Rudra with a white throat, to the youngest, the radiant one,
उग्रायुधाय देवय नमः सुरवराय च । नमोऽस्तु बहुरूपाय नमस्ते बहुधन्विने ॥ ३६ ॥
rudrāya śitikaṇṭhāya kaniṣṭhāya suvarcasē
To the one with matted hair, the terrifying, the boon-giver,
नमोऽस्तु स्थाणवे नित्यं नमस्तस्मै सुधन्विने । नमोऽस्तु त्रिपुरघ्नाय भगघ्नाय च वै नमः ॥ ३७ ॥
kapardinē karālāya haryakṣa varadāya ca
To Yama with red hair, to the righteous Shankara,
वनस्पतीनां पतये नराणां पतये नमः । मातॄणां पतये चैव गणानां पतये नमः ॥ ३८ ॥
yāmyāyāraktakēśāya sadvr̥ttē śaṅkarāya ca
To the one with the deer-eyed, to the steadfast man,
गवां च पतये नित्यं यज्ञानां पतये नमः । अपां च पतये नित्यं देवानां पतये नमः ॥ ३९ ॥
kāmyāya harinētrāya sthāṇavē puruṣāya ca
To Hari with the golden hair, to the youngest, the radiant one,
पूष्णो दन्तविनाशाय त्र्यक्षाय वरदाय च । हराय नीलकण्ठाय स्वर्णकेशाय वै नमः ॥ ४० ॥
harikēśāya muṇḍāya kaniṣṭhāya suvarcasē
To Bhaskara, the one who is a sacred pilgrimage, to the god of gods, the glorious,
इति श्रीमहाभारते द्रोणपर्वणि त्र्यधिकद्विशतोऽध्याये ईशान स्तुतिः ॥
bhāskarāya sutīrthāya dēvadēvāya raṁhasē
To the many-formed, to Sharva, to the beloved, the one who dwells in love.
