Shadanana Stuti
This stotra praises Lord Murugan, invoking his six faces and their divine qualities, emphasizing his role as a protector and guide.
श्री सुब्रह्मण्य स्तोत्राणि
śrīgaurīsahitēśaphālanayanādudbhūtamagnyāśuga- -vyūḍhaṁ viṣṇupadīpayaḥ śaravaṇē sambhūtamanyādr̥śam
O Lord Subrahmanya, may the six-faced praise be glorified.
श्रीगौरीसहितेशफालनयनादुद्भूतमग्न्याशुग-
ṣōḍhāvigrahasundarāsyamamalaṁ śrīkr̥ttikāprītayē śarvāṇyaṅkavibhūṣaṇaṁ sphuratu maccittē guhākhyaṁ mahaḥ
From the eyes of Gauri, the wondrous and swift,
-व्यूढं विष्णुपदीपयः शरवणे सम्भूतमन्यादृशम् । षोढाविग्रहसुन्दरास्यममलं श्रीकृत्तिकाप्रीतये
triṣaḍakr̥śadr̥gabjaḥ ṣaṇmukhāmbhōruhaśrīḥ dviṣaḍatulabhujāḍhyaḥ kōṭikandarpaśōbhaḥ
May the light of Vishnu, born in the forest of Saravana,
शर्वाण्यङ्कविभूषणं स्फुरतु मच्चित्ते गुहाख्यं महः ॥ १ ॥
śikhivaramadhirūḍhaḥ śikṣayan sarvalōkān kalayatu mama bhavyaṁ kārtikēyō mahātmā
Shine forth, resembling the beautiful figure of the sixteen-armed.
त्रिषडकृशदृगब्जः षण्मुखाम्भोरुहश्रीः
yadrūpaṁ nirguṇaṁ tē tadiha guṇamahāyōgibhirdhyānagamyaṁ yaccānyadviśvarūpaṁ tadanavadhitayā yōgibhiścāpyacintyam
May the pure and lovely form, pleasing to Krittika,
द्विषडतुलभुजाढ्यः कोटिकन्दर्पशोभः । शिखिवरमधिरूढः शिक्षयन् सर्वलोकान्
ṣaḍvaktrāṣṭādaśākṣādyupahitakaruṇāmūrtirēṣaiva bhāti svārādhyāśēṣaduḥkhapraśamanabahulīlāspadā cāpyatulyā
Radiate the divine ornament of all beings, known as Guhya.
कलयतु मम भव्यं कार्तिकेयो महात्मा ॥ २ ॥
yacchrīmatpādapaṅkēruhayugalamahāpādukē svasvamūrdhnā dhartuṁ viṣṇupramukhyā api ca sumanasaḥ prāgakurvaṁstapāṁsi
He who has the form of the thirty-two-eyed, six-faced,
यद्रूपं निर्गुणं ते तदिह गुणमहायोगिभिर्ध्यानगम्यं
tattādr̥ksthūlabhūtaṁ padakamalayugaṁ yōgihr̥ddhyānagamyaṁ śrīsubrahmaṇya sākṣāt sphuratu mama hr̥di tvatkaṭākṣēṇa nityam
Is adorned with the beauty of a hundred million Kamadevas.
यच्चान्यद्विश्वरूपं तदनवधितया योगिभिश्चाप्यचिन्त्यम् । षड्वक्त्राष्टादशाक्षाद्युपहितकरुणामूर्तिरेषैव भाति
yasya śrīśamukhāmarāśca jagati krīḍāṁ ca bālyōdbhavāṁ citrārōpitamānuṣā iva samālōkyābhavaṁstambhitāḥ
Seated on the crest of a peacock, he teaches all worlds.
स्वाराध्याशेषदुःखप्रशमनबहुलीलास्पदा चाप्यतुल्या ॥ ३ ॥
lōkōpadravakr̥tsa nāradapaśuryasyābhavadvāhanaṁ sō:'smān pātu nirantaraṁ karuṇayā śrībālaṣāṇmāturaḥ
May the great soul Kartikeya bless me with his grace.
यच्छ्रीमत्पादपङ्केरुहयुगलमहापादुके स्वस्वमूर्ध्ना
yēna sākṣāccaturvaktraḥ praṇavārthavinirṇayē
That which is formless, may it be realized through meditation by great yogis.
धर्तुं विष्णुप्रमुख्या अपि च सुमनसः प्रागकुर्वंस्तपांसि । तत्तादृक्स्थूलभूतं पदकमलयुगं योगिहृद्ध्यानगम्यं
kārāgr̥haṁ prāpitō:'bhūt subrahmaṇyaḥ sa pātu mām
That which is the universal form, may it be contemplated by the unthinkable yogis.
श्रीसुब्रह्मण्य साक्षात् स्फुरतु मम हृदि त्वत्कटाक्षेण नित्यम् ॥ ४ ॥
kāruṇyadrutapañcakr̥tyaniratasyānandamūrtērmukhaiḥ śrīśambhōḥ saha pañcabhiśca girijāvaktraṁ militvāmalam
This form, endowed with compassion, shines with six faces and twelve eyes.
यस्य श्रीशमुखामराश्च जगति क्रीडां च बाल्योद्भवां
yasya śrīśivaśaktyabhinnavapuṣō vaktrābjaṣaṭkākr̥tiṁ dhattē sō:'suravaṁśabhūdharapaviḥ sēnāpatiḥ pātu naḥ
It is a place of abundant play that alleviates all sorrows.
चित्रारोपितमानुषा इव समालोक्याभवंस्तम्भिताः । लोकोपद्रवकृत्स नारदपशुर्यस्याभवद्वाहनं
yaḥ śaktyā tārakōraḥsthalamatikaṭhinaṁ krauñcagōtraṁ ca bhittvā hatvā tatsainyaśēṣaṁ nikhilamapi ca tān vīrabāhupramukhyān
May I be able to bear the weight of the two lotus feet of the Lord,
सोऽस्मान् पातु निरन्तरं करुणया श्रीबालषाण्मातुरः ॥ ५ ॥
uddhr̥tvā yuddharaṅgē sapadi ca kusumairvarṣitō nākibr̥ndaiḥ pāyādāyāsatō:'smān sa jhaṭiti karuṇārāśirīśānasūnuḥ
Even as the foremost of Vishnu, the pure-hearted, perform penance.
येन साक्षाच्चतुर्वक्त्रः प्रणवार्थविनिर्णये ।
yaddūtō vīrabāhuḥ sapadi jalanidhiṁ vyōmamārgēṇa tīrtvā jitvā laṅkāṁ samētya drutamatha nagarīṁ vīramāhēndranāmnīm
That which is substantial, the lotus feet, is accessible through the heart of the yogi.
कारागृहं प्रापितोऽभूत् सुब्रह्मण्यः स पातु माम् ॥ ६ ॥
dēvānāśvāsya śūraprahitamapi balaṁ tatsabhāṁ gōpurādīn bhittvā yatpādapadmaṁ punarapi ca samētyānamattaṁ bhajē:'ham
O Lord Subrahmanya, may you ever shine in my heart with your glance.
कारुण्यद्रुतपञ्चकृत्यनिरतस्यानन्दमूर्तेर्मुखैः
yō vaikuṇṭhādidēvaiḥ stutapadakamalō vīrabhūtādisainyaiḥ saṁvītō yō nabhastō jhaṭiti jalanidhiṁ dyōpathēnaiva tīrtvā
Whose face is the moon, and who brings forth play in the world,
श्रीशम्भोः सह पञ्चभिश्च गिरिजावक्त्रं मिलित्वामलम् । यस्य श्रीशिवशक्त्यभिन्नवपुषो वक्त्राब्जषट्काकृतिं
śūradvīpōttarasyāṁ diśi maṇivilasaddhēmakūṭākhyapuryāṁ tvaṣṭurnirmāṇajāyāṁ kr̥tavasatirabhūt pātu naḥ ṣaṇmukhaḥ saḥ
Like humans adorned with colorful garments, they stand still in awe.
धत्ते सोऽसुरवंशभूधरपविः सेनापतिः पातु नः ॥ ७ ॥
nānābhūtaughavidhvaṁsitanijapr̥tanō nirjitaśca dvirāvr̥- -ttyālabdhasvāvamānē nijapitari tataḥ saṅgarē bhānukōpaḥ
The disturbances of the world, whose vehicle is Narada,
यः शक्त्या तारकोरःस्थलमतिकठिनं क्रौञ्चगोत्रं च भित्त्वा
māyī yatpādabhr̥tyapravarataramahāvīrabāhupraṇaṣṭa- -prāṇō:'bhūt sō:'stu nityaṁ vimalataramahāśrēyasē tārakāriḥ
May he protect us continuously with his compassion, O youthful Lord.
हत्वा तत्सैन्यशेषं निखिलमपि च तान् वीरबाहुप्रमुख्यान् । उद्धृत्वा युद्धरङ्गे सपदि च कुसुमैर्वर्षितो नाकिबृन्दैः
yēna kr̥cchrēṇa nihataḥ siṁhavaktrō mahābalaḥ
By whom the four-faced one is directly brought to the essence of the sacred syllable,
पायादायासतोऽस्मान् स झटिति करुणाराशिरीशानसूनुः ॥ ८ ॥
dvisahasrabhujō bhīmaḥ sasainyastaṁ guhaṁ bhajē
May Subrahmanya, who has come to my aid, protect me.
यद्दूतो वीरबाहुः सपदि जलनिधिं व्योममार्गेण तीर्त्वा
bhūribhīṣaṇamahāyudhārava- -kṣōbhitābdhigaṇayuddhamaṇḍalaḥ
May he, who is engaged in the five acts of compassion,
जित्वा लङ्कां समेत्य द्रुतमथ नगरीं वीरमाहेन्द्रनाम्नीम् । देवानाश्वास्य शूरप्रहितमपि बलं तत्सभां गोपुरादीन्
siṁhavaktraśivaputrayō raṇaḥ siṁhavaktraśivaputrayōriva
With the pure face of Girija, be our protector.
भित्त्वा यत्पादपद्मं पुनरपि च समेत्यानमत्तं भजेऽहम् ॥ ९ ॥
śūrāpatyagaṇēṣu yasya gaṇapairnaṣṭēṣu siṁhānanō daityaḥ krūrabalō:'surēndrasahajaḥ sēnāsahasrairyutaḥ
Whose six-faced form, distinct from the power of Shiva,
यो वैकुण्ठादिदेवैः स्तुतपदकमलो वीरभूतादिसैन्यैः
yuddhē cchinnabhujōttamāṅganikarō yadbāhuvajrāhatō mr̥tyuṁ prāpa sa mr̥tyujanyabhayatō māṁ pātu vallīśvaraḥ
Is upheld by the leader of the celestial hosts, may he protect us.
संवीतो यो नभस्तो झटिति जलनिधिं द्योपथेनैव तीर्त्वा । शूरद्वीपोत्तरस्यां दिशि मणिविलसद्धेमकूटाख्यपुर्यां
aṣṭōttarasahasrāṇḍaprāptaśūrabalaṁ mahat
He who, with his power, breaks through the hard shell of the Krouncha lineage,
त्वष्टुर्निर्माणजायां कृतवसतिरभूत् पातु नः षण्मुखः सः ॥ १० ॥
kṣaṇēna yaḥ saṁhr̥tavān sa guhaḥ pātu māṁ sadā
And slays all his enemies, may he protect us, led by the brave.
नानाभूतौघविध्वंसितनिजपृतनो निर्जितश्च द्विरावृ-
aṇḍabhittiparikampibhīṣaṇa- -krūrasainyaparivārapūrṇayōḥ
Having lifted the battlefield, immediately showered with flowers by the celestial hosts,
-त्त्यालब्धस्वावमाने निजपितरि ततः सङ्गरे भानुकोपः । मायी यत्पादभृत्यप्रवरतरमहावीरबाहुप्रणष्ट-
śūrapadmaguhayōrmahāraṇaḥ śūrapadmaguhayōrivōlbaṇaḥ
May that son of the compassionate Lord, who swiftly protects us,
-प्राणोऽभूत् सोऽस्तु नित्यं विमलतरमहाश्रेयसे तारकारिः ॥ ११ ॥
nānārūpadharaśca nistulabalō nānāvidhairāyudhai- -ryuddhaṁ dikṣu vidikṣu darśitamahākāyō:'ṇḍaṣaṇḍēṣvapi
The heroic one with mighty arms, having crossed the ocean by the celestial path,
येन कृच्छ्रेण निहतः सिंहवक्त्रो महाबलः ।
yaḥ śaktyāśu vibhinnatāmupagataḥ śūrō:'bhavadvāhanaṁ kētuścāpi namāmi yasya śirasā tasyāṅghripaṅkēruhē
Having conquered Lanka, may he quickly reach the city named after the great hero.
द्विसहस्रभुजो भीमः ससैन्यस्तं गुहं भजे ॥ १२ ॥
kēkikukkuṭarūpābhyāṁ yasya vāhanakētutām
May he, who calms the gods and is endowed with strength, break through the assembly of the powerful,
भूरिभीषणमहायुधारव-
adyāpi vahatē śūrastaṁ dhyāyāmyanvahaṁ hr̥di
And having met again at the lotus feet, may I worship him in my intoxication.
-क्षोभिताब्धिगणयुद्धमण्डलः । सिंहवक्त्रशिवपुत्रयो रणः
dēvaiḥ sampūjitō yō bahuvidhasumanōvarṣibhirbhūriharṣai- -rvr̥trāriṁ svargalōkē vipulataramahāvaibhavairabhyaṣiñcat
He who is praised by the gods of Vaikuntha and the armies of heroic beings,
सिंहवक्त्रशिवपुत्रयोरिव ॥ १३ ॥
taddattāṁ tasya kanyāṁ svayamapi kr̥payā dēvayānāmudūhya śrīmatkailāsamāpa drutamatha lavalīṁ cōdvahaṁstaṁ bhajē:'ham
Who swiftly crosses the ocean by the celestial path, may he protect us.
शूरापत्यगणेषु यस्य गणपैर्नष्टेषु सिंहाननो
tatrānantaguṇābhirāmamatulaṁ cāgrē namantaṁ sutaṁ yaṁ dr̥ṣṭvā nikhilaprapañcapitarāvāghrāya mūrdhnyādarāt
In the northern direction of the island of heroes, in the city named Hemakuta,
दैत्यः क्रूरबलोऽसुरेन्द्रसहजः सेनासहस्रैर्युतः । युद्धे च्छिन्नभुजोत्तमाङ्गनिकरो यद्बाहुवज्राहतो
svātmānandasukhātiśāyi paramānandaṁ samājagmatuḥ maccittabhramarō vasatvanudinaṁ tatpādapadmāntarē
May the son of Tvashtar, who is established in creation, protect us.
मृत्युं प्राप स मृत्युजन्यभयतो मां पातु वल्लीश्वरः ॥ १४ ॥
duṣputrairjananī satī patimatī kōpōddhataiḥ svairiṇī- -raṇḍāsītyatininditāpi na tathā bhūyādyathā tattvataḥ
Having destroyed various beings and conquered the pride of his own father,
अष्टोत्तरसहस्राण्डप्राप्तशूरबलं महत् ।
duṣpāṣaṇḍijanairdurāgrahaparaiḥ skāndaṁ purāṇaṁ mahat mithyētyuktamapi kvacicca na tathā bhūyāttathā satyataḥ
May he, who is the source of all strength, be our refuge in battle.
क्षणेन यः संहृतवान् स गुहः पातु मां सदा ॥ १५ ॥
kiṁ tu taddūṣaṇāttēṣāmēva kutsitajanmanām
May he, who is the embodiment of the eternal, pure, and supreme glory, be our guiding star.
अण्डभित्तिपरिकम्पिभीषण-
aihikāmuṣmikamahāpuruṣārthakṣayō bhavēt
By whom, with great difficulty, the mighty lion-faced one,
-क्रूरसैन्यपरिवारपूर्णयोः । शूरपद्मगुहयोर्महारणः
yatsaṁhitāṣaṭkamadhyē dvitīyā sūtasaṁhitā
With two thousand arms, fierce and powerful, I worship in the cave.
शूरपद्मगुहयोरिवोल्बणः ॥ १६ ॥
bhāti vēdaśirōbhūṣā skāndaṁ tatkēna varṇyatē
The ocean, stirred by the great weapons of battle, is filled with the tumult of war.
नानारूपधरश्च निस्तुलबलो नानाविधैरायुधै-
yasya śambhau parā bhaktiryasminnīśakr̥pāmalā
In the battle of the lion-faced one and the son of Shiva,
-र्युद्धं दिक्षु विदिक्षु दर्शितमहाकायोऽण्डषण्डेष्वपि । यः शक्त्याशु विभिन्नतामुपगतः शूरोऽभवद्वाहनं
apāṁsulā yasya mātā tasya skāndē bhavēdratiḥ
May the roar of the lion resonate among the heroic lineage.
केतुश्चापि नमामि यस्य शिरसा तस्याङ्घ्रिपङ्केरुहे ॥ १७ ॥
ṣaḍānanastutimimāṁ yō japēdanuvāsaram
The cruel demon, born of the gods, surrounded by thousands of armies,
केकिकुक्कुटरूपाभ्यां यस्य वाहनकेतुताम् ।
dharmamarthaṁ ca kāmaṁ ca mōkṣaṁ cāpi sa vindati
In battle, having his arms cut off, may he be struck down by the thunderbolt of the arm.
अद्यापि वहते शूरस्तं ध्यायाम्यन्वहं हृदि ॥ १८ ॥
iti śrīṣaḍānana stutiḥ
May the Lord of the vines protect me from the fear of death,
