Sri Pashupathi Ashtakam
The ashtakam consists of eight verses that extol the qualities and powers of Lord Pashupati, emphasizing His role as the protector and sustainer of all life.
ध्यायेन्नित्यं महेशं रजतगिरिनिभं चारुचन्द्रावतंसं
dhyāyēnnityaṁ mahēśaṁ rajatagirinibhaṁ cārucandrāvataṁsaṁ ratnākalpōjjvalāṅgaṁ paraśumr̥gavarābhītihastaṁ prasannam
I meditate always on the great lord, resembling a silver mountain, with a beautiful moon-like face.
रत्नाकल्पोज्ज्वलाङ्गं परशुमृगवराभीतिहस्तं प्रसन्नम् ।
padmāsīnaṁ samantāt stutamamaragaṇairvyāghrakr̥ttiṁ vasānaṁ viśvādyaṁ viśvabījaṁ nikhilabhayaharaṁ pañcavaktraṁ trinētram
He has a radiant body like a jewel, holding a fear-removing axe in his hand, and is ever blissful.
पद्मासीनं समन्तात् स्तुतममरगणैर्व्याघ्रकृत्तिं वसानं
paśupatiṁ dyupatiṁ dharaṇīpatiṁ bhujagalōkapatiṁ ca satīpatim
Seated on a lotus, praised by the celestial beings, he wears the skin of a tiger.
विश्वाद्यं विश्वबीजं निखिलभयहरं पञ्चवक्त्रं त्रिनेत्रम् ॥
praṇata bhaktajanārtiharaṁ paraṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
He is the universal lord, the seed of the universe, the remover of all fears, with five faces and three eyes.
पशुपतिं द्युपतिं धरणीपतिं
na janakō jananī na ca sōdarō na tanayō na ca bhūribalaṁ kulam
He is the lord of all creatures, the king of the earth,
भुजगलोकपतिं च सतीपतिम् ।
avati kō:'pi na kālavaśaṁ gataṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
the lord of the serpent world, and the husband of Sati.
प्रणत भक्तजनार्तिहरं परं
murajaḍiṇḍimavādyavilakṣaṇaṁ madhurapañcamanādaviśāradam
He is the supreme one who removes the distress of devoted beings who bow to him.
भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥ १ ॥
pramathabhūtagaṇairapi sēvitaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
O man, worship the lord of Girija.
न जनको जननी न च सोदरो
śaraṇadaṁ sukhadaṁ śaraṇānvitaṁ śiva śivēti śivēti nataṁ nr̥ṇām
Neither father nor mother, nor brother,
न तनयो न च भूरिबलं कुलम् ।
abhayadaṁ karuṇāvaruṇālayaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
neither son nor a powerful lineage,
अवति कोऽपि न कालवशं गतं
naraśirōracitaṁ maṇikuṇḍalaṁ bhujagahāramudaṁ vr̥ṣabhadhvajam
can protect anyone who has fallen under the influence of time.
भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥ २ ॥
citirajōdhavalīkr̥tavigrahaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
O man, worship the lord of Girija.
मुरजडिण्डिमवाद्यविलक्षणं
makhavināśakaraṁ śaśiśēkharaṁ satatamadhvarabhāji phalapradam
He is the unique sound of the drum,
मधुरपञ्चमनादविशारदम् ।
pralayadagdhasurāsuramānavaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
skilled in the sweet melody of five notes,
प्रमथभूतगणैरपि सेवितं
madamapāsya ciraṁ hr̥di saṁsthitaṁ maraṇajanmajarābhayapīḍitam
served even by the hosts of spirits and goblins.
भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥ ३ ॥
jagadudīkṣya samīpabhayākulaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
O man, worship the lord of Girija.
शरणदं सुखदं शरणान्वितं
harivirañcisurādhipapūjitaṁ yamajanēśadhanēśanamaskr̥tam
He is the giver of refuge, the bestower of happiness, and is accompanied by those who seek shelter.
शिव शिवेति शिवेति नतं नृणाम् ।
trinayanaṁ bhūvanatritayādhipaṁ bhajata rē manujā girijāpatim
He is called Shiva, Shiva, by the beings of this world.
अभयदं करुणावरुणालयं
paśupatēridamaṣṭakamadbhutaṁ viracitaṁ pr̥thivīpatisūriṇā
He is the giver of fearlessness, the abode of compassion.
भजत रे मनुजा गिरिजापतिम् ॥ ४ ॥
paṭhati saṁśr̥ṇutē manujaḥ sadā śivapurīṁ vasatē labhatē mudam
O man, worship the lord of Girija.
नरशिरोरचितं मणिकुण्डलं
iti śrīpr̥thivīpatisūriviracitaṁ śrīpaśupatyaṣṭakam
He wears earrings made of precious stones on his head,
