Sri Skanda Stotram (Mahabharatam)
This stotra praises Lord Murugan, invoking his protection and guidance through the verses found in the Mahabharata.
श्री सुब्रह्मण्य स्तोत्राणि
mārkaṇḍēya uvāca
Mārkaṇḍeya said,
मार्कण्डेय उवाच ।
āgnēyaścaiva skandaśca dīptakīrtiranāmayaḥ
Skanda, the one with brilliant fame, is also known as Agni.
आग्नेयश्चैव स्कन्दश्च दीप्तकीर्तिरनामयः । मयूरकेतुर्धर्मात्मा भूतेशो महिषार्दनः ॥ १ ॥
mayūrakēturdharmātmā bhūtēśō mahiṣārdanaḥ
Mayūraketu, the virtuous one, is the slayer of the buffalo demon.
कामजित्कामदः कान्तः सत्यवाग्भुवनेश्वरः । शिशुः शीघ्रः शुचिश्चण्डो दीप्तवर्णः शुभाननः ॥ २ ॥
kāmajitkāmadaḥ kāntaḥ satyavāgbhuvanēśvaraḥ
He who conquers desires, the giver of desires, is the beloved, the lord of truth.
अमोघस्त्वनघो रौद्रः प्रियश्चन्द्राननस्तथा । दीप्तशक्तिः प्रशान्तात्मा भद्रकुक्कुटमोहनः ॥ ३ ॥
śiśuḥ śīghraḥ śuciścaṇḍō dīptavarṇaḥ śubhānanaḥ
He is a child, swift, pure, fierce, with a radiant complexion, and a beautiful face.
षष्ठीप्रियश्च धर्मात्मा पवित्रो मातृवत्सलः । कन्याभर्ता विभक्तश्च स्वाहेयो रेवतीसुतः ॥ ४ ॥
amōghastvanaghō raudraḥ priyaścandrānanastathā
He is invincible, without sin, fierce, and beloved with a moon-like face.
प्रभुर्नेता विशाखश्च नैगमेयः सुदुश्चरः । सुव्रतो ललितश्चैव बालक्रीडनकप्रियः ॥ ५ ॥
dīptaśaktiḥ praśāntātmā bhadrakukkuṭamōhanaḥ
He possesses great power, is tranquil in spirit, and is the charming rooster.
खचारी ब्रह्मचारी च शूरः शरवणोद्भवः । विश्वामित्रप्रियश्चैव देवसेनाप्रियस्तथा ।
ṣaṣṭhīpriyaśca dharmātmā pavitrō mātr̥vatsalaḥ
He is dear to the sixth, virtuous, pure, and affectionate like a mother.
वासुदेवप्रियश्चैव प्रियः प्रियकृदेव तु ॥ ६ ॥
kanyābhartā vibhaktaśca svāhēyō rēvatīsutaḥ
The husband of the maiden, he is divided and belongs to Svāhā, the son of Revati.
नामान्येतानि दिव्यानि कार्तिकेयस्य यः पठेत् ।
prabhurnētā viśākhaśca naigamēyaḥ suduścaraḥ
He is the lord, the leader, and difficult to attain, known as Viśākha.
स्वर्गं कीर्तिं धनं चैव स लभेन्नात्र संशयः ॥ ७ ॥
suvratō lalitaścaiva bālakrīḍanakapriyaḥ
He is steadfast, charming, and loves the play of children.
स्तोष्यामि देवैरृषिभिश्च जुष्टं
khacārī brahmacārī ca śūraḥ śaravaṇōdbhavaḥ
He is a wanderer, a celibate, a hero, born from the forest of Saravana.
शक्त्या गुहं नामभिरप्रमेयम् । षडाननं शक्तिधरं सुवीरं
viśvāmitrapriyaścaiva dēvasēnāpriyastathā
He is dear to Viśvāmitra and also beloved by the army of the gods.
निबोध चैतानि कुरुप्रवीर ॥ ८ ॥
vāsudēvapriyaścaiva priyaḥ priyakr̥dēva tu
He is dear to Vāsudeva and is indeed the beloved creator of the beloved.
ब्रह्मण्यो वै ब्रह्मजो ब्रह्मविच्च
nāmānyētāni divyāni kārtikēyasya yaḥ paṭhēt
These divine names of Kārtikeya, whoever recites them...
ब्रह्मेशयो ब्रह्मवतां वरिष्ठः । ब्रह्मप्रियो ब्राह्मणसर्वमन्त्री त्वं
svargaṁ kīrtiṁ dhanaṁ caiva sa labhēnnātra saṁśayaḥ
He who attains heaven, fame, and wealth, there is no doubt about it.
ब्रह्मणां ब्राह्मणानां च नेता ॥ ९ ॥
stōṣyāmi dēvairr̥ṣibhiśca juṣṭaṁ śaktyā guhaṁ nāmabhirapramēyam
I will praise the gods and sages who are pleased.
स्वाहा स्वधा त्वं परमं पवित्रं
ṣaḍānanaṁ śaktidharaṁ suvīraṁ nibōdha caitāni kurupravīra
By power, you are the unmeasurable Guha with names.
मन्त्रस्तुतस्त्वं प्रथितः षडर्चिः । संवत्सरस्त्वमृतवश्च षड्वै
brahmaṇyō vai brahmajō brahmavicca brahmēśayō brahmavatāṁ variṣṭhaḥ
You are the six-faced, the bearer of strength, the brave one.
मासार्धमासाश्च दिनं दिशश्च ॥ १० ॥
brahmapriyō brāhmaṇasarvamantrī tvaṁ brahmaṇāṁ brāhmaṇānāṁ ca nētā
Listen to these, O hero of great deeds.
त्वं पुष्कराक्षस्त्वरविन्दवक्त्रः
svāhā svadhā tvaṁ paramaṁ pavitraṁ mantrastutastvaṁ prathitaḥ ṣaḍarciḥ
You are indeed the knower of Brahman, the essence of Brahman.
सहस्रचक्षोऽसि सहस्रबाहुः । त्वं लोकपालः परमं हविश्च
saṁvatsarastvamr̥tavaśca ṣaḍvai māsārdhamāsāśca dinaṁ diśaśca
You are the greatest among those who embody Brahman.
त्वं भावनः सर्वसुरासुराणाम् ॥ ११ ॥
tvaṁ puṣkarākṣastvaravindavaktraḥ sahasracakṣō:'si sahasrabāhuḥ
You are beloved of Brahman, the minister of all Brahmins.
त्वमेव सेनाधिपतिः प्रचण्डः
tvaṁ lōkapālaḥ paramaṁ haviśca tvaṁ bhāvanaḥ sarvasurāsurāṇām
You are the leader of Brahmins and of Brahmins.
प्रभुर्विभुश्चाप्यथ शक्रजेता । सहस्रभूस्त्वं धरणी त्वमेव
tvamēva sēnādhipatiḥ pracaṇḍaḥ prabhurvibhuścāpyatha śakrajētā
O supreme purity, you are Svāhā and Svadhā.
सहस्रतुष्टिश्च सहस्रभुक्च ॥ १२ ॥
sahasrabhūstvaṁ dharaṇī tvamēva sahasratuṣṭiśca sahasrabhukca
You are praised in mantras, renowned as the six-rayed one.
सहस्रशीर्षस्त्वमनन्तरूपः
sahasraśīrṣastvamanantarūpaḥ sahasrapāttvaṁ daśaśaktidhārī
You are the year, the immortal, and the sixfold.
सहस्रपात्त्वं दशशक्तिधारी । गङ्गासुतस्त्वं स्वमतेन देव
gaṅgāsutastvaṁ svamatēna dēva svāhāmahīkr̥ttikānāṁ tathaiva
You are the months, the half-months, the days, and the directions.
स्वाहामहीकृत्तिकानां तथैव ॥ १३ ॥
tvaṁ krīḍasē ṣaṇmukha kukkuṭēna yathēṣṭanānāvidhakāmarūpī
You are the lotus-eyed, the one with a swift face.
त्वं क्रीडसे षण्मुख कुक्कुटेन
dīkṣā:'si sōmō marutaḥ sadaiva dharmō:'si vāyuracalēndra indraḥ
You are the thousand-eyed, the thousand-armed.
यथेष्टनानाविधकामरूपी । दीक्षाऽसि सोमो मरुतः सदैव
sanātanānāmapi śāśvatastvaṁ prabhuḥ prabhūṇāmapi cōgradhanvā
You are the protector of the worlds and the supreme offering.
धर्मोऽसि वायुरचलेन्द्र इन्द्रः ॥ १४ ॥
r̥tasya kartā ditijāntakastvaṁ jētā ripūṇāṁ pravaraḥ surāṇām
You are the essence of all gods and demons.
सनातनानामपि शाश्वतस्त्वं
sūkṣmaṁ tapastatparamaṁ tvamēva parāvarajñō:'si parāvarastvam
You alone are the fierce commander of the army.
प्रभुः प्रभूणामपि चोग्रधन्वा । ऋतस्य कर्ता दितिजान्तकस्त्वं
dharmasya kāmasya parasya caiva tvattējasā kr̥tsnamidaṁ mahātman
You are the lord, the all-pervading one, and the conqueror of Indra.
जेता रिपूणां प्रवरः सुराणाम् ॥ १५ ॥
vyāptaṁ jagatsarvasurapravīra śaktyā mayā saṁstuta lōkanātha
You are the thousand-fold, the earth itself.
सूक्ष्मं तपस्तत्परमं त्वमेव
namō:'stu tē dvādaśanētrabāhō ataḥ paraṁ vēdmi gatiṁ na tē:'ham
You are the one who grants a thousand satisfactions and the one who consumes a thousand.
परावरज्ञोऽसि परावरस्त्वम् । धर्मस्य कामस्य परस्य चैव
skandasya ya idaṁ vipraḥ paṭhējjanma samāhitaḥ
You are the thousand-headed, the form without end.
त्वत्तेजसा कृत्स्नमिदं महात्मन् ॥ १६ ॥
śrāvayēdbrāhmaṇēbhyō yaḥ śr̥ṇuyādvā dvijēritam
You are the thousand-footed, the bearer of ten powers.
व्याप्तं जगत्सर्वसुरप्रवीर
dhanamāyuryaśō dīptaṁ putrān śatrujayaṁ tathā
You are the son of Ganga, O god, by your own will.
शक्त्या मया संस्तुत लोकनाथ । नमोऽस्तु ते द्वादशनेत्रबाहो
sa puṣṭituṣṭī samprāpya skandasālōkyamāpnuyāt
You are also the earth, the one who is the essence of the Krittikā stars.
अतः परं वेद्मि गतिं न तेऽहम् ॥ १७ ॥
iti śrīmanmahābhāratē araṇyaparvaṇi trayastriṁśadadhikadviśatatamō:'dhyāyē skanda stōtram
You play with the six-faced rooster, as you wish, in various forms of desire.
