Sri Somasundara Ashtakam
The stotram consists of verses that celebrate the enchanting form of Lord Somasundara, inviting devotees to seek his grace and blessings.
इन्द्र उवाच । एकं ब्रह्माद्वितीयं च परिपूर्णं परापरम् ।
indra uvāca
Indra said,
इति यो गीयते वेदैस्तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ १ ॥
ēkaṁ brahmādvitīyaṁ ca paripūrṇaṁ parāparam
I bow to Somasundara, who is the one non-dual Brahman, complete and beyond.
ज्ञातृज्ञानज्ञेयरूपं विश्वव्याप्यं व्यवस्थितम् ।
iti yō gīyatē vēdaistaṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who is sung about in the Vedas.
यं सर्वैरप्यदृश्योयस्तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ २ ॥
jñātr̥jñānajñēyarūpaṁ viśvavyāpyaṁ vyavasthitam
I bow to Somasundara, who is the essence of knowledge, the knower, and the known, pervading the universe.
अश्वमेधादियज्ञैश्च यः समाराध्यते द्विजैः ।
yaṁ sarvairapyadr̥śyōyastaṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who is invisible to all.
ददाति च फलं तेषां तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ३ ॥
aśvamēdhādiyajñaiśca yaḥ samārādhyatē dvijaiḥ
I bow to Somasundara, who is worshipped by the twice-born through sacrifices like the Ashvamedha.
यं विदित्वा बुधाः सर्वे कर्मबन्धविवर्जिताः ।
dadāti ca phalaṁ tēṣāṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who grants the fruits of their sacrifices.
लभन्ते परमां मुक्तिं तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ४ ॥
yaṁ viditvā budhāḥ sarvē karmabandhavivarjitāḥ
I bow to Somasundara, whom the wise, knowing him, are liberated from the bondage of actions.
देवदेवं यमाराध्य मृकण्डुतनयो मुनिः ।
labhantē paramāṁ muktiṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who grants the highest liberation.
नित्यत्वमगमत्सद्यस्तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ५ ॥
dēvadēvaṁ yamārādhya mr̥kaṇḍutanayō muniḥ
I bow to Somasundara, who is worshipped by the sage Mrikandu and is the Lord of Lords.
निजनेत्राम्बुजकृतं पूजया परितोष्ययम् ।
nityatvamagamatsadyastaṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who is eternal and always present.
श्रीपतिर्लभते चक्रं तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ६ ॥
nijanētrāmbujakr̥taṁ pūjayā paritōṣyayam
I bow to Somasundara, who is pleased by the worship performed with the lotus of one's own eyes.
येन सर्वं जगत्सृष्टं रक्षितं संहृतं क्रमात् ।
śrīpatirlabhatē cakraṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who grants the divine wheel to the devotee.
नत्वं विज्ञानमानन्दं तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ७ ॥
yēna sarvaṁ jagatsr̥ṣṭaṁ rakṣitaṁ saṁhr̥taṁ kramāt
I bow to Somasundara, by whom the entire universe is created, protected, and ultimately dissolved.
यस्मात्परं चापरं च किञ्चिद्वस्तु न विद्यते ।
natvaṁ vijñānamānandaṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
I bow to Somasundara, who is the embodiment of knowledge and bliss.
ईश्वरं सर्वभूतानां तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ८ ॥
yasmātparaṁ cāparaṁ ca kiñcidvastu na vidyatē
From whom there is nothing superior or inferior, I bow to that Lord of all beings, the beautiful moon.
यस्मै वेदाश्च चत्वारो नमस्यन्त वपुर्धराः ।
īśvaraṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
To whom the four Vedas bow down, I bow to that Lord of all knowledge, the beautiful moon.
ईशानं सर्वविद्यानां तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ९ ॥
yasmai vēdāśca catvārō namasyanta vapurdharāḥ
By whose mere salutation all wealth is present, I bow to that Shambhu who grants all accomplishments, the beautiful moon.
यस्य प्रणाममात्रेण सन्ति सर्वाश्च सम्पदः ।
īśānaṁ sarvavidyānāṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
By whose mere sight, sins like the killing of a Brahmin are surely destroyed, I bow to that beautiful moon.
सर्वसिद्धिप्रदं शम्भुं तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ १० ॥
yasya praṇāmamātrēṇa santi sarvāśca sampadaḥ
Whose excellent feet are not seen even by Brahma and Vishnu, I bow to that beautiful moon.
यस्य दर्शनमात्रेण ब्रह्महत्यादि पातकम् ।
sarvasiddhipradaṁ śambhuṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
Thus, in the glory of Shri Halasya, this octet composed by Indra, I bow to that beautiful moon.
अवश्यं नश्यति क्षिप्रं तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ ११ ॥
yasya darśanamātrēṇa brahmahatyādi pātakam
—
उत्तमाङ्गं च चरणं ब्रह्मणा विष्णुनापि च ।
avaśyaṁ naśyati kṣipraṁ taṁ vandē sōmasundaram
—
न दृश्यते यस्य यत्नस्तं वन्दे सोमसुन्दरम् ॥ १२ ॥
uttamāṅgaṁ ca caraṇaṁ brahmaṇā viṣṇunāpi ca
—
इति श्रीहालास्यमाहात्म्ये इन्द्रकृतं श्रीसोमसुन्दराष्टकम् ।
na dr̥śyatē yasya yatnastaṁ vandē sōmasundaram
