दशमहाविद्या स्तोत्राणि
prātaryā sẏātkumārī kusumakalikayā jāpamālāṁ japantī madhyāhnē prauḍharūpā vikasitavadanā cārunētrā niśāyāṁ
The goddess, the supreme goddess, the mother of the three worlds, may Kali protect you.
प्रातर्या स्य़ात्कुमारी कुसुमकलिकया जापमालां जपन्ती
sandhyāyāṁ vr̥ddharūpā galitakucayugā muṇḍamālāṁ vahantī sā dēvī dēvadēvī tribhuvanajananī kālikā pātu yuṣmān
With a staff and a plough, adorned with a crown of matted hair, she is the lotus-born.
मध्याह्ने प्रौढरूपा विकसितवदना चारुनेत्रा निशायां । सन्ध्यायां वृद्धरूपा गलितकुचयुगा मुण्डमालां वहन्ती
badhvā khaṭvāṅgakhēṭau kapilavarajaṭāmaṇḍalaṁ padmayōnēḥ kr̥tvā daityōttamāṅgaiḥ srajamurasi śiraśśēkharaṁ tārkṣyapakṣaiḥ
Having defeated the best of the demons, she wears a garland of heads on her crown.
सा देवी देवदेवी त्रिभुवनजननी कालिका पातु युष्मान् ॥ १ ॥
pūrṇaṁ raktaiḥ surāṇāṁ yamamahiṣamahāśr̥ṅgamādāya pāṇau pāyādvō vandyamāna pralaya muditayā bhairavaḥ kālarātryām
With a full cup of red wine in her hand, she is worshipped by the Bhairava during the night of dissolution.
बध्वा खट्वाङ्गखेटौ कपिलवरजटामण्डलं पद्मयोनेः
carvantīmastikhaṇḍaṁ prakaṭakaṭakaṭā śabdasaṅghāta mugraṁ kurvāṇā prētamadhyē kahaha kahakahā hāsyamugraṁ kr̥śāṅgī
She chews the flesh of the dead, making a terrifying sound, and is known as the slender one.
कृत्वा दैत्योत्तमाङ्गैः स्रजमुरसि शिरश्शेखरं तार्क्ष्यपक्षैः । पूर्णं रक्तैः सुराणां यममहिषमहाशृङ्गमादाय पाणौ
nityaṁ nityaprasaktā ḍamaruḍamaḍimān sphārayantī mukhābjaṁ pāyānnaścaṇḍikēyaṁ jhajhamajhamajhamā jalpamānā bhramantī
Always engaged in eternal activities, she expands her lotus-like face.
पायाद्वो वन्द्यमान प्रलय मुदितया भैरवः कालरात्र्याम् ॥ २ ॥
ṭaṇṭaṇṭaṇṭaṇṭaṭaṇṭāprakara ṭamaṭamānādaghaṇṭā vahantī sphēṁsphēṁsphēṁsphāra kārāṭakaṭakitahasā nādasaṅghaṭṭabhīmā
May the fierce goddess, who is always in motion, protect us as she dances with a clamor.
चर्वन्तीमस्तिखण्डं प्रकटकटकटा शब्दसङ्घात मुग्रं
lōlā muṇḍāgramālā lala halahalahā lōlalōlāgra vācaṁ carvantī caṇḍamuṇḍaṁ maṭamaṭamaṭitē carvayantīpunātu
With her drum echoing, she creates an overwhelming sound that is both frightening and powerful.
कुर्वाणा प्रेतमध्ये कहह कहकहा हास्यमुग्रं कृशाङ्गी । नित्यं नित्यप्रसक्ता डमरुडमडिमान् स्फारयन्ती मुखाब्जं
vāmēkarṇē mr̥gāṅkapralayaparigataṁ dakṣiṇē sūryabimbaṁ kaṇṭhēnakṣatrahāraṁ varavikaṭajaṭājūṭakēmuṇḍamālāṁ
The sound of her laughter reverberates, and she consumes the essence of the universe.
पायान्नश्चण्डिकेयं झझमझमझमा जल्पमाना भ्रमन्ती ॥ ३ ॥
skandhē kr̥tvōragēndra dhvajanikarayutaṁ brahmakaṅkālabhāraṁ saṁhārē dhārayantī mama haratu bhayaṁ bhadradā bhadrakālī
She chews the skulls of the fierce ones, and with her playful laughter, she purifies the world.
टण्टण्टण्टण्टटण्टाप्रकर टमटमानादघण्टा वहन्ती
tailābhyaktaikavēṇītrapumayavilasatkarṇikākrāntakarṇā lōhēnai kēna kr̥tvā caraṇanalinakā mātmanaḥ pādaśōbhāṁ
On her left ear, she has the sun, and on her neck, she wears a necklace of stars.
स्फेंस्फेंस्फेंस्फार काराटकटकितहसा नादसङ्घट्टभीमा । लोला मुण्डाग्रमाला लल हलहलहा लोललोलाग्र वाचं
digvāsārāsabhēna grasati jagadidaṁ yā yavākarṇapūrā varṣiṇyātiprabaddhā dhvajavitatabhujā bhāsi dēvi tvamēva
With the might of the great serpent, she bears the weight of time on her shoulders.
चर्वन्ती चण्डमुण्डं मटमटमटिते चर्वयन्तीपुनातु ॥ ४ ॥
saṅgrāmē hētikr̥tyaiḥ sarudhiradaśanairyadbhaṭānāṁ śirōbhiḥ mālāmābaddhyamūrdhni dhvajavitatabhujā tvaṁ śmaśānē praviṣṭā
In destruction, she holds my fears, may the auspicious goddess, Bhadrakali, protect me.
वामेकर्णे मृगाङ्कप्रलयपरिगतं दक्षिणे सूर्यबिम्बं
dr̥ṣṭā bhūtaprabhūtaiḥpr̥thutarajaghanā baddhanāgēndrakāñcī śūlāgravyagrahastā madhurudhiravasā tāmranētrā niśāyām
Anointed with oil, her single braid shines like a beautiful flower.
कण्ठेनक्षत्रहारं वरविकटजटाजूटकेमुण्डमालां । स्कन्धे कृत्वोरगेन्द्र ध्वजनिकरयुतं ब्रह्मकङ्कालभारं
damṣṭrāraudrē mukhē:'smiṁ stava viśati jagaddēvi sarvaṁ kṣaṇārdhāt saṁsārasyāntakālē nararudhiravasāsamplavē dhūmadhūmrē
With her feet, she crushes the world, and with her powerful presence, she fills the universe.
संहारे धारयन्ती मम हरतु भयं भद्रदा भद्रकाली ॥ ५ ॥
kāli kāpālikī sā śavaśayanaratā yōginī yōgamudrā raktārūkṣā sabhāsthā maraṇabhayaharā tvaṁ śivā caṇḍaghaṇṭā
You, who are bound by the flag of victory, shine forth, O goddess!
तैलाभ्यक्तैकवेणीत्रपुमयविलसत्कर्णिकाक्रान्तकर्णा
dhūmāvatyaṣṭakaṁ puṇyaṁ sarvāpadvinivāraṇaṁ
In battle, with fierce teeth, may you protect the heads of the warriors.
लोहेनै केन कृत्वा चरणनलिनका मात्मनः पादशोभां । दिग्वासारासभेन ग्रसति जगदिदं या यवाकर्णपूरा
yaḥpaṭhētsādhakō bhaktyā siddhiṁ vindati vāñchitām
With a garland of skulls on your head, you enter the cremation ground.
वर्षिण्यातिप्रबद्धा ध्वजविततभुजा भासि देवि त्वमेव ॥ ६ ॥
mahāpadi mahāghōrē mahārōgē mahāraṇē
Seen by the powerful beings, you are bound by the great serpent’s coils.
सङ्ग्रामे हेतिकृत्यैः सरुधिरदशनैर्यद्भटानां शिरोभिः
śatrūccāṭē māraṇādau jantūnāṁ mōhanē tathā
With a spear in hand, with eyes like copper, you are fierce in the night.
मालामाबद्ध्यमूर्ध्नि ध्वजविततभुजा त्वं श्मशाने प्रविष्टा । दृष्टा भूतप्रभूतैःपृथुतरजघना बद्धनागेन्द्रकाञ्ची
paṭhēt stōtramidaṁ dēvi sarvataḥ siddhibhāgbhavēt
In the face of destruction, you enter the world, O goddess, in the moment of dissolution.
शूलाग्रव्यग्रहस्ता मधुरुधिरवसा ताम्रनेत्रा निशायाम् ॥ ७ ॥
dēvadānavagandharvā yakṣarākṣasapannagāḥ
O Kali, the Kapalika, you who are engaged in the embrace of the corpse, the yogini with the yogic mudra,
दम्ष्ट्रारौद्रे मुखेऽस्मिं स्तव विशति जगद्देवि सर्वं क्षणार्धात्
siṁhavyāghrādikāssarvē stōtrasmaraṇamātrataḥ
You are the red and fierce one, the remover of the fear of death, O Shiva, the fearsome one with the bell.
संसारस्यान्तकाले नररुधिरवसासम्प्लवे धूमधूम्रे । कालि कापालिकी सा शवशयनरता योगिनी योगमुद्रा
dūrāddūrātaraṁ yānti kimpunarmānuṣādayaḥ
The eightfold worship of Dhūmāvatī is a sacred practice that dispels all dangers.
रक्तारूक्षा सभास्था मरणभयहरा त्वं शिवा चण्डघण्टा ॥ ८ ॥
stōtrēṇānēna dēvēśi kinna siddhyati bhūtalē
Whoever recites this with devotion will attain the desired success.
धूमावत्यष्टकं पुण्यं सर्वापद्विनिवारणं ।
sarvaśāntirbhavēddēvi antē nirvāṇatāṁ vrajēt
In the great path, in the terrible calamity, in the great disease, in the great battle,
यःपठेत्साधको भक्त्या सिद्धिं विन्दति वाञ्छिताम् ॥ ९ ॥
iti ūrdhvāmnāyē śrī dhūmavatīstōtraṁ sampūrṇam
When enemies are defeated, in the moment of death, and in the enchantment of beings,
