The Brihat-Samhita by Varaha Mihira is an encyclopedia of wide-ranging subjects of human interest, including astrology, planetary movements, eclipses, rainfall, clouds, architecture, growth of crops, matrimony, domestic relations, gems, pearls and rituals. It contains one hundred and six chapters. It was written in the 6th century A.D. (or 1st century B.C.) in about 4000 Sanskrit verses (slokas) by the polymath known as Varahamihira, who was considered as a great scientific scholar of mathematics, astronomy and astrology.
