Legend

Annapurna Devi is a form of the goddess Parvati and is known as the goddess of food and nourishment. She is depicted as a young, trinetri (three-eyed) and four-handed woman, carrying a pot full of porridge and a spoonful of porridge in another hand.  According to puranic beliefs, once lord shiva told goddess Parvati about the material world and material reality among everyone. Even the food we eat to survive is an illusion of material pleasure. This enraged Goddess Parvati, as she is considered to be the goddess of “food”.  While arguing about the statement of lord shiva, goddess Parvati decided to disappear to make him realize the importance of food for living beings.

After disappearing, humans started to starve, land became barren, including various gods, people suffered famine, and they started witnessing a shortage of food on earth. Everyone gathered in front of lord shiva and started praying for their survival and begging for food. Goddess Parvati could not see her children suffering, so she re-emerged and appeared in a form of Annapurna Devi in Kashi to distribute food. Lord shiva came to realize his mistake and confessed it to goddess Parvati.

It came with the realization that shiv and shakti, both are equally important for the world to exist. Since then Annapurna Devi is worshiped as the goddess of food and nourishment. In Hinduism, people worship food before having it, and it is highly praised. it is highly believed that people who worship the goddess Annapurna, never run out of food.

Annapurna Devi mandir in Kashi is dedicated to maa Annapurna in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh. Prasad (foods offered to the goddess) are distributed to the elderly and disabled every evening. During Navaratri, food is distributed on a larger scale to the devotees.

Since Akshaya Tritiya is considered the birthdate of Devi Annapurna, it is an auspicious time to buy gold.
