Legend
According to Kashi Khand, Chandra (Moon) erected this Ling so people might worship Lord Shiva. A well known as Chandra Koop was also excavated by Chandra. One of the Navgraha Shiv Lings is Chandreshwar Ling, and those who go on Navagraha Yatras offer prayers to Chandreshwar Ling.
Chandra performed arduous, deep penance (Tapas) to appease Lord Shiva after erecting this Ling. After several years of this, Lord Shiva finally showed up in person to bless Chandra. According to Lord Shiva, the location of Ling’s installation is a Shakti Peeth (seat of vital energy). On Poornima days (Full Moon), a person who conducts pooja and Archana at Shiv Ling would get the maximum level of prosperity and pleasure.
Additionally, Lord Shiva gave the Monday holiday known as Amavasya particular significance (Somvati Amavasya). On Triodasi (two days before Amavasya), devotees should do Chandreshwar pooja and maintain fast.
Chaturdasi (one day before Amavasya). Finally, the devotees should bathe in Chandra Koop on Somvati Amavasya and do Shraddh Karma for their ancestors. They will receive their ancestors’ blessings and the utmost happiness as a result.
If the ancestral ceremonies cannot be carried out for whatever reason, worshippers should at least touch Chandra Koop’s water. Again, in order to receive the advantages mentioned in the preceding sentence, the devotee should at least view Chandra Koop’s water if for some reason he is unable to touch it.
Devotees should provide food to Sanyasis (Saints) etc. after conducting the pooja etc. as previously said. If the Star Chitra coincides with the Poornima days in the month of Chaitra (March–April), they should do the aforementioned poojas and other rituals for Chandreshwar. Even if a devoted follower of Chandreshwar passes away anywhere other than Kashi, he will undoubtedly enter paradise. (Chapter 14 of Kashi Khand). Chandreshwar Ling’s worship promotes mental tranquility and thought clarity. People who are afflicted by the moon’s unfavorable planetary position at Chandreshwar Temple might find relief by participating in special poojas there.
