The temple is located in the Bhairav Temple complex near the Kashi Vishwanath Temple, one of the most famous Hindu temples in India. The complex consists of several small temples, each dedicated to a different deity.
The main deity of the Kapal Bhairav Temple is Lord Bhairav, who is depicted with his consort, Bhairavi. The idol of Lord Bhairav is a unique one as it is not made of any metal, stone or wood, but it is made out of the skull of a goat. This is why the temple is called Kapal Bhairav Temple, where "kapal" means skull in Hindi.
The temple is considered very sacred by the devotees of Lord Bhairav, who come here to offer their prayers and seek his blessings. It is believed that Lord Bhairav is a protector deity who can protect his devotees from all kinds of dangers and obstacles.
