Tirunallurperumanam Temple, the fifth Tevara Stalam on the northern banks of the river Kaveri in the Chola region of Tamil Nadu, stands as a testament to spirituality and historical significance. Located 6 km east of the Kollidam railway station south of Chidambaram, this temple has a rich history intertwined with legends and events.
The Temple:
Tirunallurperumanam Temple encompasses an area of about an acre and features two prakarams (enclosures). Tall walls line the outer prakaram, and the entrance is crowned with a Rajagopuram. The temple's architecture reflects the grandeur of the Chola period.
Within the temple, a 100-pillared hall in the outer prakaram houses images of Sambandar and his consort. The sanctum, adorned with 50 pillars showcasing exquisite stonework, stands as a testament to the artistic prowess of its builders. The temple complex is blessed with several Theerthams (sacred ponds), further enhancing its spiritual aura.
Inscriptions from the period of the Imperial Cholas (including Raja Raja I, Vikrama, Kulottunga III, Raja Raja III) and Maravarman Parakrama Pandyan, recording endowments made to the temple, are preserved here. The Ambal shrine within the temple was constructed around the year 1210 CE.
