Trilok Sundari Temple
Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh
This deity is also known as Sheetla Devi. Sheetla Mata is a Hindu goddess who is believed to be the goddess of smallpox, measles, and other infectious diseases. She is worshipped mainly in northern India, especially in the states of Rajasthan, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.
According to legend, she protects her devotees from these diseases and is often depicted with a broom in one hand and a winnowing fan in the other. Her devotees believe that by worshipping her and observing certain rituals, they can prevent or cure infectious diseases.
In many parts of India, there is a tradition of offering puffed rice and water to Sheetla Mata as a form of worship. Her festival, called Sheetla Ashtami, is celebrated in the month of Chaitra (March-April) and is an occasion for fasting, feasting, and seeking the blessings of the goddess.
