Legend
Chapter 24 of Kashi Khand states that Vridha Kal was a devoted follower. In his previous life, he lived in the holy city of Madurai and went by the name Siva Sharma. He arrived at Vaikunth and passed away there. He took a rebirth and arrived in Kashi as a result of his Punya karma. In due order, the Ling he was worshipping came to be known as Vridha Kaleshwar.
The temple with the Ling within was thought to have been erected by Vridha Kal, but he insisted that Lord Mahadev had done the building. As a result, it is still advised that we refrain from boasting about whatever good deeds we perform. The relevant authorities will eventually acknowledge the excellent conduct, and the due rewards will follow.
A new temple named Kaleshwar was constructed in a separate neighborhood when the first Daranagar temple in the area went extinct. At the original location (Daranagar), a temple was later rebuilt. To distinguish between the two, the old temple is known as Vridha Kaleshwar.
A person who does pooja and Archana at Vridha Kaleshwar, by Kashi Khand, is said to be granted all of his wishes, to be completely happy, and to be free from all kinds of illnesses and poverty. The water from the nearby Kalodak Well will cure any illnesses. Both the Ling Puran and the Brahma Vaivart Puran make mention of Vridha Kaleshwar.
