लालयेत्पञ्चवर्षाणि दशवर्षाणि ताडयेत् । प्राप्ते तु षोडशे वर्षे पुत्रे मित्रवदाचरेत् ॥ lālayetpañcavarṣāṇi daśavarṣāṇi tāḍayet | prāpte tu ṣoḍaśe varṣe putre mitravadācaret ||

Fondle a son until he is five years of age, and use the stick for another ten years, but when he has attained his sixteenth year treat him as a friend

पांच साल तक पुत्र को लाड एवं प्यार से पालन करना चाहिए, दस साल तक उसे छड़ी की मार से डराए. लेकिन जब वह १६ साल का हो जाए तो उससे मित्र के समान वयवहार करे.
