लोभश्चेदगुणेन किं पिशुनता यद्यस्ति किं पातकैः सत्यं चेत्तपसा च किं शुचि मनो यद्यस्ति तीर्थेन किम् । सौजन्यं यदि किं गुणैः सुमहिमा यद्यस्ति किं मण्डनैः सद्विद्या यदि किं धनैरपयशो यद्यस्ति किं मृत्युना ॥

What vice could be worse than covetousness? What is more sinful than slander? For one who is truthful, what need is there for austerity? For one who has a clean heart, what is the need for pilgrimage? If one has a good disposition, what other virtue is needed? If a man has fame, what is the value of other ornamentation? What need is there for wealth for the man of practical knowledge? And if a man is dishonoured, what could there be worse in death?

लोभ से बड़ा दुर्गुण क्या हो सकता है. पर निंदा से बड़ा पाप क्या है. जो सत्य में प्रस्थापित है उसे तप करने की क्या जरूरत है. जिसका ह्रदय शुद्ध है उसे तीर्थ यात्रा की क्या जरूरत है. यदि स्वभाव अच्छा है तो और किस गुण की जरूरत है. यदि कीर्ति है तो अलंकार की क्या जरुरत है. यदि व्यवहार ज्ञान है तो दौलत की क्या जरुरत है. और यदि अपमान हुआ है तो मृत्यु से भयंकर नहीं है क्या.
