According to our ancient Puranas, Ma Gundodari is the holy divine attendant of Ma Shakti Devi. She was given that name because of her large frame. We could have seen images of Ma Gundodari in some Ma Shakti Devi temple Gopurams, eagerly blowing a form of Shanku (Holy Conch). Ma Gundodari is mentioned in the Devi Bhagavatha Purana as an honest and sincere servant of Ma Shakti Devi, and she could always be seen fondly serving Ma Shakti Devi.

Ma Gundodari was present with Ma Shakti Devi when she performed penance on Lord Shiva in the Himalayas, and she guards her wonderfully. The holy mother bestowed some excellent boons on her because of her steadfast devotion and affection for her master, Ma Shakti Devi. As a result of the boons, she now has the ability to lift large mountains with her bare hands. Ma Gundodari can also fight with anyone, and during the Daksha Yagna, when Ma Sati Devi, a form of Ma Shakti Devi, fell into the holy fire, she tried her hardest to protect her, but she couldn't.

Sri Veda Vyasa praised Ma Gundodari as well, dedicating a few hymns to her in the Devi Mahatmyam. He also mentions Ma Gundodari as a form of Ma Shakti Devi, and she has some of Ma Shakti Devi's characteristics. She can never be separated from her master, Ma Shakti Devi, because she is a part of the holy mother. Ma Gundodari transformed into the Divine weapon Trident and assisted Ma Durga in easily killing the dreaded demon Mahishasura when Ma Shakti Devi took the form of Durga and killed Mahishasura.
