Rátri, the goddess of the night, is only mentioned in one hymn (x. 127). She is Usas's sister, and she, too, is referred to as a daughter of heaven. She is envisioned as the bright starlit night, not the dark. She drives away the darkness, decked out in all her splendour. Men, beasts, and birds all flee when she approaches. She protects her followers from the wolf and the thief and leads them to safety. Night appears as a dual divinity with Dawn in the form of Usása-nákta and Náktosása, appearing in approximately twenty scattered stanzas of the Rigveda under the name nákta n., combined with usás.
