After offering salutations (namas-kṛtya... tataḥ)1 to Nārāyaṇa (nārāyaṇam) and (ca eva) Nara (naram), the best (uttamam) of men (nara)2, (as well as) to the goddess (devīm) Sarasvatī --the goddess of knowledge and eloquence-- (sarasvatīm) (and) Vyāsa (vyāsam), one should utter (udīrayet) Jaya --i.e. the Śrīmadbhāgavata-- (jayam)
